I have half an acre beautiful lawn with really thick grass. I have been maintaining it using a riding mower but there are some steep and narrow areas where it had always been difficult to run the riding mower. Thatâs where this walk behind comes into picture.
Mower shipped in a well-packaged box but some kind of oil was spilled all over the mower deck. A simple wipe took care of that. It took me less than a minute to assemble the handle and about 5 minutes to adjust the deck height to 3â. Mower ships with the lowest deck setting i.e. 1â. When adjusting the deck height, you actually raise/lower the wheels by unbolting/bolting each wheel separately to a desired height. Since this is my first walk behind mower so I am not sure if itâs an industry standard method. But since I had to do it only one time, it wasnât a big deal. Mulching attachment comes pre-attached but you can swap it with the provided side discharge attachment if you plan to chute the grass clippings out.
First time start took a lot of pulls but after that, itâs been starting on almost every subsequent first pull. Even though it has 7â wheels, I had no problems pushing it through tall grass area. It did a great job trimming the grass. The best part of this mower is its Honda engine. I know it will last me many years. Simple and easy to use mower at a great price makes it a great buy.

Excellent Honda motor...high quality hardware. Light wt and pushes ez.
Did a decent job as shipped but I replaced the OEM blade with a universal gator blade. (Look for the one wth the 3/8 center hole and universal slot for the mounting pins). We've been terribly wet and I needed more "blow" out the discharge. The gator sits 1/2" higher in the deck and gives me a better cut height, keeps the dome cleaner, and blows much better. It turned a good mower into an awesome one.
Would definately do this again...my expensive jd mower is now resting in the corner. This out powers it and cuts cleaner and is easier to trim with.

I am 32 and have owned many mowers in my life. My previous mower, the one I just replaced, was a similar model to this new Honda powered Southland. The Southland has been designed very intelligently with a nod to keeping things simple and built with quality. Compared to my other mower, this one is far superior!
Right out of the box, It took less than 5 minutes to get going. The handles fold up, screw into place with 2 bolts at the bottom, near the wheels, and 2 wingnut screws to anchor the push bar. I installed the ring that holds the ripcord and then added the oil and gas.
It started on the 2nd pull! I was VERY impressed!
I pointed it to my lawn and took the first pass. I noticed the lawn was cut very short. Knowing that these mowers have adjustable blades, I checked the height. It was on setting 1. 1 is the lowest (shortest) setting. I saw that the manual recommended #3 for optimal cutting. I settled on #2. Each lawn is different, so you may need to take a few passes to see what works best for you.
I cut the lawn and rolled the mower to my driveway to let it rest before putting it back in my garage. 1 hour later I rolled it back. I let it rest on the driveway to see if it let off any fluids from the initial manufacturing. Nothing was leaking or dripping. This is a GREAT LAWN MOWER!
In summary, This mower is a great value for what you get. The engine is powerful and rated perfectly for its overall size. The wheels are sturdy and designed well. The height of the pushbar is comfortable. It started right from the start. It did not take 20+ pulls to get the engine to fire up!
I trust Honda Power and I hope you trust my assessment of this mower.

This mower comes with a great motor and one of the most well built decks I have seen from this class of mowers. You set the wheels and forget it too, Great! Pull the rope and go, and best yet the mower is built in America!

Out of the box it only required six bolts for assembly, and the oil was even included. Got the thing up and running in just a few minutes - started on the first pull! Easy to use, very powerful for it's size. I procrastinated getting a mower and it easily chomped through tall grass without leaving large strands of cut grass (aka - no raking after mowing!). It would be nice to adjust the cutting height without taking off all four wheels, but I think we'll just leave it at one height for eternity.
