Can this be direct buried? If not, which CAT6 cable can be buried directly in the ground?

Asked by: captain
No; you must look for direct burial CAT6 cable (CMX) which has a waterproof jacket.

What is the Mega Hertz rating of cable, 250? would prefer higher!
Asked by: JM
250. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

difference between riser and plenum cable

Asked by: opie
Riser cable is used in most residential applications or multi-level apartment buildings. It can be run vertically behind walls and under floors as long as it is not placed in air handling or plenum spaces. Plenum cable is used in most commercial or residential applications where the cable is run in a plenum or air handling space. Plenum has a more fire retardant jacket with less smoke, etc. Always follow state and local codes and requirements when installing these products. I have attached a spec sheet for Category 6 cable for your review.

Our Client wants "Belldon" CAT6 cable. Is this a manufacture name or a grade that you match?

Asked by: Ray
If they are specifying Belden, you must use Belden. It is unacceptable to substitute other vendors' products when a specific product is called out in specs unless the specs state "or equivalent" and even then Belden manufactures about twelve different types of CAT6 cable and you would need to verify compatibility.

Customer Reviews

1000 ft. Blue 23/4 CAT6 Plenum CMP Cable is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Replaced the good with the bad I do a LOT of network wiring (about 5-10K feet/month) and had been using Home Depot's General Cable brand which was superb! Nice thick jacket that was consistently round and easy to strip. Home Depot replaced General Cable with Southwire a few months ago and I can't stand this cable! The outer jacket is very thin and almost seems like it has been heat shrunk around the UTP wires and thus it is very bumpy. This makes it very hard to strip without nicking the wires even with good UTP strippers! Worst of all is that each and every box will get tangled somewhere along the line! Never had that problem with General Cable. Wish HD would switch back to General Cable!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Biggest issue I have with this cable is the lack of foot marks. It actually does have marks on it... Biggest issue I have with this cable is the lack of foot marks. It actually does have marks on it, but they are not 0-1000 but manufacture marks that are in the 80000 range. You have to look at the beginning mark and then subtract 1000 from that and write it on the box. Then when you need to know how much cable is in the box you have to do the math. If you forget to write the number on the box, you are screwed. As far as the pulling of the cable, I didn't have any issues there. It seems to come right out with no kinks. After the cable is out of the box, it does tangle easy, but I feel all cable does that once it's out of the box. The jacket is tight on the cable do if you use one of the strippers you could nick the cable, I don't use one so that's not a big deal to me. The conductors are spot on in my book and I've had no issues with the performance of the cable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Ever! This is the worst wire I've ever TRIED to use. The whites are not marked to their corresponding pair, they are all plain white. The conductors are thin and break easily. So easily that unspooling 70' of cable from the box generated opens in the length. I can't even imagine trying to pull this stuff. The jackets are thin and brittle easy to strip with your finger nails but not real useful. I've been doing this for years and could successfully make a 10' patch cable without opens or shorts in 7 attempts. I'm returning the remainder of the spool and will never buy this brand again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Southwire cat5e cable received wire 3 days after ordering. this is a good solid copper wire not cca. only complaint is there are no markings on the cable to let you know how much is left in the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome wires, Awesome Price This wire is awesome. It's core is not the thick plastic X I am used to, it is a single rubbery feeling ribbon with a | shape going down the center of the wire. This made it a little more flexible (made pulling it a breeze) and a lot easier to terminate. Make sure you never kink or force this wire while pulling it, pull gently. 25lbs of pulling force maximum. (Make sure to purchase Caddy J-Hooks to support it. It is so sloppy to just leave it lying on top of a drop ceiling.) After my first 150' run, I put my network certifier on it and it passed with flying colors. It had a skew of just 7ns at that distance! This wire is made in the USA and is the most affordable USA plenum coated CAT6 I could find (beat the supply house pricing). BEWARE OTHER VENDORS SELLING CHEAPER PLENUM CAT6 WIRE. I recently was burned on wire I purchased from another huge online retailer. It stated it was TIA/EIA 568 Spec, and it was, until you passed ~80ft then it went downhill from there. 50+ns skew on a 100' run? HA! (tia spec states a max of 50ns skew on a 300' run with anything over 25ns being marginal) These con artists get away with selling terrible wire because VERY few people actually have the tools to test it. BUY THIS WIRE, You will not find better wire at a better price ANYWHERE! I hope The Home Depot never stops selling it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Cable... Avoid.. If you pull and terminate a lot of Cat5e, avoid this brand. It's garbage. The General cable that HD used to carry was great, This cable is trash and is HDs way of selling cable for the lowest cost. Of course, with the "lower" cost comes low quality. I buy a lot of cable and am no longer buying from you HD. I've gone to the better brands and won't look back.
