Suncast ALMOST gets it right. The mechanism that transfers the energy of water pressure to leverage for turning the reel is actually pretty amazing. They use three pistons (at least in the one that I tore apart) coupled to an ingenious valve system to crank the reel round and round. It's a fairly complicated but very will conceived system that, in itself, works pretty well. BUT… apparently to save a few cents of production cost, the engineers used weak and non-durable material in some very critical places and those quickly fail. On my hose reel the element that switched the flow of water from the hose you water plants with to the piston mechanism completely locked up - to the point the switching handle broke off. I have a passion for fixing things and I'm pretty good at it but there was just no practical way I could repair the problems (some swollen and torn O-rings deep within the mechanism and some other very flimsy cast-plastic parts). Some soft plastic gears and cogs are also a problem and were on their way to failure too, so I had to trash the whole thing. Too bad - "for want of a nail… a battle was lost."

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nick Excellent and easy
All the fittings were fine. They are standard size so I do not know how one buyer had a problem fitting the hoses.
I does not really need feeding unless the hose is all awry. Make sure the hose is sort of lined up and it will do it without you.
My complaint is the plastic gears. They will break but I think that comes from my wife's heavy handed use of the unit. She does not like it at all but that is her problem with all things mechanical. If the gears could be covered with a thin, metallic shell, it would live longer although I've had mine for four years and have identified one stripped gear.
After watching the video, I am curious about the reciprocating mechanism. I may have to sacrifice one to tear apart.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by PWJ Worked ok about 5 times then started malfunctioning.
It took me over 10 minutes to attach the drain hose because it was too small to fit properly to the water outlet. After about 5 or 6 uses it would no longer rewind properly. The winding stops and all you get is a clattering sound and you have to reach inside and turn the spool by hand in order to finish winding..
I called Suncast customer service and the arrogant woman I spoke to refused to do anything without a receipt. I usually keep receipts for smaller purchases until I use the item a few times. I didn't keep it long enough this time. Read the reviews. This is a TERRIBLE product and Suncast knows this.

Product well for now. However, my concern is about longevity. I purchased this one to replace the same one that was purchased about 2 years ago. I like the product when it works which is why I bought it again. I just hope that I get a longer useful life this time.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by CharlesBoston Fragile mechanism, mouth works well
My unit worked about 5 times when the mechanism stopped working, the switch broke off and the unit leaked profusely. Suncast sent me a replacement mechanism and it has been working pretty well. The mechanism doesn't look all that sturdy, and the handle attachment doesn't look like it can handle the torque repeatedly over many years. That said, I think it's pretty cost effective to replace the water system core. It doesn't inspire confidence, but it works smoothly and quietly so far.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by SteveC Very Useful But Not Durable
I love the way this reel works. It is very convenient to have the hose roll up automatically. The bad news is that the device is not very durable. I have to get a new one every 3 years because the auto rewind function loses power and eventually stops working. It may be my fault for not putting it in the garage in the winter? I live in Seattle and it does occasionally drop below freezing.

The hose reel, was as advertised.
It is simple to use and appears sturdy.
I would recommend this product to anyone seeking an automatic hose reel.
I could not give this a 5 for value, because the last one I had, which lasted 10 years and was made by a different company and was much cheaper (The company was sold to the current company). I hope this one last as long.
