Product Overview

Taco Flo-Checks are used in a forced hot water heating system to prevent gravity circulation during periods when the boiler is hot but the space heating zone is not wanted. This makes it possible for the use of the heating boiler to maintain domestic hot water year round. In systems with multiple circulator zones, Flo-Checks allow heat to flow only into the zones that are calling for heat.

  • Improves boiler efficiency
  • Universal thread design provides for compatibility with most forced hot water heaters
  • Cast iron construction for durability
  • Automatically opens and closes when your circulator activates and deactivates for simple operation; thumb screw allows manual operation in the event that your system's main circulator stops running
  • 125 psi maximum operating pressure; 277°F maximum operating temperature

Hi, Our system is combination wood hot water and oil back up, two separate heating units piped together. When wood is fired-up, such as now, we have a continuous circulator pump operating to keep the wood "boiler" from over-heating and sharing the hot water with the oil burner hot water reservoir. Problem is occasionally the TACO 218 opens up for a zone - even though the zone is not calling for heat and that zone circulator is not operating. I think I set the TACO 218 at max resistance, but it is still allowing for the circulation.

I have experienced this same problem in my own home, but the system was much different. A flow check is a simple check valve. If enough pressure differential exists it will lift and there will be flow through a zone when it is not welcome. In my case the system worked fine for ten years then I started to get the symptom of un-requested heat. I changed the flow checks and it continued. In the end I never found the reason or what had changed to cause this. My solution was to add zone valves as positive stops. Now I only get flow when the system opens the zone valve. Water moves to pressure drop and for some reason I and you have a pressure drop that is significant enough to lift the flow check. I would speculate that this is due, in your case to the pump on the wood boiler and fact that wood systems are not closed loop.

Vertical vs horizontal

Does this valve have an orientation? Can it be installed vertically as well as horizontally?
Asked by: murphcc1
Yes it does. This is a horizontal flow check for a hydronic heating system. If must be installed as you see it in the image; with the handle in the upright position. The unit has two input options. Either the bottom or the side. The one not used needs to be plugged. The output is always on the side. Please note this check valve is only for a hydronic heating system and not for use in other applications. If you have questions please feel free to give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301
