Customer Questions & Answers

Should Allure Ultra be applied directly over cement floor which has some staining & glue residue or should some sort of vapor barrier be put down?

Cement floor has been scraped and leveled
Asked by: Anonymous
My advice is do not waste your money putting this down in the basement. I laid down Allure Ultra and what seemed like a perfect fit only ended up as boards peeling apart later. When I told Home Depot about it, they were quick to point out my floor must not be level. I did patch jobs to even out the floor, but if your basement floor is sloped to a central drain, don't even bother because you will be flushing your money down the toilet. I've concluded the $1700+ I spent on Allure Ultra has been the worst money I have ever spent. If people tell you otherwise, be very cautious... you are rolling the dice on whether or not it works, so unless you're OK with potentially losing the money you've spent, don't do it. You have been warned.

what is the wear layer on this product? How scuff and tear resistant would it be in a retail installlation?

Asked by: creativedrapery
it scuffs up real easy. any furniture movement will scratch and scuff. and it is so slick our heavy couch slides when we sit down.

Installing under a toilet and cabinets

We were considering Pergo but decided on this product because it is 100% waterproof. Our research on floating floors is to "not" install them under islands and cabinets but yet under a stove and refrigerator is fine. I read that some people have installed this product under cabinets but what about toilets? I cannot find anything in the instructions as to what the manufacturer recommends. Thoughts?
Asked by: KenR
I removed the toilet, installed the flooring and reinstalled the toilet. It is not hard to do and you will have a much nicer, more professional looking job, and not have to be concerned about perfectly trimming the planks to meet the toilet base. Just be sure to buy a new wax ring and maybe longer toilet hold down bolts, which are not expensive at all.

How is this stuff cut?

I scored twice and got nowhere. My husband scored several more times and finally broke through after he slammed it onto the wall corner. I can't imagine doing 312 square feet like this! The knife blades were new.
Asked by: wonderwoman
I'm a 23 year old total newbie at floor installation. I did my entire house with this. You gotta be smarter than the floor. I used heavy duty scissors (almost like hedge clippers to cut length. If I had to cut the width, well let me tell you that any method would be torture. So I used a tablesaw. As long as you're skilled at holding it down it will be Easy peasy. But if you have a tiny pebble under a chair and slide backward, your floor will take a beating. It's not scratch proof at ALL. Although my dogs nails don't ever scratch it. Be really cautious about keeping your floors clean and I guess you'll be fine.

I thought it would last as well as the cheapest lam that we bought for our out building our dog sleep in and kids play in but we were wrong,

I replaced 300 sq.ft. of older rigid laminate flooring in my kitchen with this product. If there are no obstructions, it lays pretty quickly and it's easy to score and cut across the width. It took about 5 evenings to finish the project. A couple of tips: 1. Be prepared to fiddle with the first 2 rows to get tight joints. 2. We ended up having to use a 3-4" wide putty knife and a hammer to tap things in place and that often threw other boards out of place. 3. Complex cuts are easier with a jigsaw or coping saw. Fine metal cutting blades work better. You can make perpendicular cuts with a hacksaw and then score between those cuts but you'll need pliers to snap the piece out. 4. Ripping it lengthwise is best done with a tablesaw or contractor's saw. 5. It is difficult to lay the last row when there are obstructions like baseboard heaters or you're trying to fit it under molding. 6. Remove door molding as necessary to simplify the cuts needed. 7. Make sure the room temperature is well above 65F (18C). 70F (21C) seemed to be high enough to make the boards flexible enough to install. 8. If you can remove all the appliances and furniture from the room, it will go much more quickly. 9. Doors may or may not have to be removed. So far we like the flooring. Time will tell how well it wears, especially near the kitchen door.

The floor was easy to install and was easy to cut to fit around the toilet and vents. I like the texture because it gives the floor depth and makes it look like a real wood floor, not to mention it is not as slippery. This floor is not the most expensive, but also is not cheap and does not look cheap. I plan to do more floor work once I can afford to purchase more.

I would not say it lives up to it's own billing as the easiest floor you will ever install. I have installed 3/4 inch hickory in the past, a notoriously hard wood making installation more difficult and found that easier to get the seems to bond between the planks than this (even though I followed the directions completely). Perhaps a professional would have better luck. I do find the floor very high quality and really like the dimensional aspect of it vs a perfectly flat board once I got it installed. The feel underfoot is also much nicer than ceramic. The product is ideally suited to be below grade and that is where I am using it.

The flooring is being installed backwards on the box. When I saw this I thought, "No way would they print the photo on the box wrong, this must be how to install it." Well, I was wrong. They messed up on the photo on the front of the box. I'll attach it to this review. Check out the installation video then look at the box photo. I cut an entire box for my first run in a large room. Had to throw it all out. It does make me question their quality control when the instructions on the box is wrong. I mean, how does a company miss that?

The color and finish is very attractive with deep and medium tones. If you go only on the look and potential level of wear, this would get a 5 star. I purchased 46 boxes to replace all of our open concept first floor. It says the easiest floor to install. It is pretty simple, not the easiest to install. I was able to lay down 19 boxes through the living, breakfast and kitchen areas. When starting your first row and going under door trim, it is simple. Ending a room under door trim is almost impossible. That being said, after I finished those rooms for the night everything look great. I had tight seams everywhere except under that door trim.... I took the next day off and came down the stairs on day 2 after installation and "Houston we have a problem". In various places the flooring is separating. Seams on both the long and short end are coming apart. There is no consistency to where it is coming apart. I looked into how to repair these and there is not a way without removing the entire floor up to that point. I have read other reviews and similar things have happened. I followed the directions, acclimated the product for 3+ days, had a flat, clean concrete sub floor. I couldn't have installed it any better. So, the product is defective. The product manual says you have to go through home depot for a claim. After waiting a week for HD to do it, they called and said that I need to contact the manufacturer directly. Going through HD was a big waste of time. I contacted the manufacturer directly and learned a very troubling bit of information. I talked to the warranty department and they asked me many questions about how I installed the flooring. I talked her through the process and she told me that she had been trained on a different installation process. Come to find out that this version of the Allure Ultra that I purchased from HD was an old version of the product and the new version is a "SimpleFit" version where the short end of the plank is installed last in a similar fashion to a "drop and lock" system. To help anyone avoid purchasing the old version, the box was mostly black with silver. The new version is apparently more of a yellow box. I asked her where I can find the new version and they only sell through HD and it is a special order. I searched HD website and there is only 1 version of this new product shown on the website. So to wrap this up, I am waiting on a claim to refund the money for what I have installed. I have to return the rest of the boxes to the store. I would avoid this version of the product. It doesn't stay locked together. I am willing to try the new version but would rather go to a "lay loose" installation. Unfortunately, HD doesn't carry anything like this in a lay loose installation and I really like the look of these vinyl planks.

I was concerned at first after reading some of the reviews on this site as whether to buy Allure Ultra flooring. I took a chance and am glad I did. I had no problem with installation and the planks snapped together as they should. I laid them over top of an existing vinyl floor in a kitchen, which was approximately 15x20. The hardest part was cutting them. I used an old hand crank tile saw I borrowed from my dad. It took me about 4 hours to complete, but I was working alone. It's been down for about two months now and looks fantastic. I haven't seen any scratches on the vinyl and I'm not easy on it and neither are my dogs. I love the durability of the planks and the fact they're waterproof. Also I sealed the baseboard with silicone caulking in case water would work its way under them. Remember the surface is waterproof, the ends are not. I would highly recommend this product and will be buying more soon to finish an adjoining laundry room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome floor We put this in our house 2 years ago except for two bedrooms. We finally did those two rooms. Easy to install and practically indestructible. We have dogs and after 3 years still looks like new.
