What do you put under the TrafficMaster Allure resilient vinly plank flooring? Can the vinyl plank be installed directly over particle board?

Asked by: Anonymous
If that particle board ever gets damp, you will have rolling hills (up to 3" high) in your floor. Particle board will swell up and raise your floor in places. I know this from experience; When a professional flooring company (that certainly should have known better) put particle board under a sheet vinyl product they installed at my home.

Basically, the only trouble I had was with the directions. They said "tap it" into place and that worked fine - on the sides. However, I think they probably would have been more accurate if they had said "wap it" in on the ends. You don't want to kill the floor or anything but I found that it often took a good "wap" with a rubber mallet on the ends to get them to seat right. A little "love tap" rarely worked. I can't say how well it's holding up because I just finished it the other day but I did install the same type of flooring only in a different pattern in a rental a couple of years ago and it seems to be holding up well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome floor We put this in our house 2 years ago except for two bedrooms. We finally did those two rooms. Easy to install and practically indestructible. We have dogs and after 3 years still looks like new.

Flooring is tricky to install and not forgiving whatsoever. Be gentle with it. The floor is delicate and does not handle force well. I suggest getting a tapping block from TrafficMaster, but again, be gentle. Also, sometimes it is necessary to use a dab of super glue (I like the gorilla gel super glue) here and there. Finally, for a pro finish, consider under-cutting door jams. You will have to flatten (ie., cut off) the lock groove and user super glue to install the plank flat under the door jam; you'll need to do this because you cannot angle the plank 10 degrees or so to achieve the snap-in lock. All in all, a very durable floor which, hopefully, will give us years of service in our house near the ocean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Allure ultra The floor is great but ran into all kinds of problems laying it. The same order number has 3 letters after it. They each have their own locking together system and do not work together! I had to order, return, reorder several times plus take up flooring and relay to get enough alike.

The floor was easy to install and was easy to cut to fit around the toilet and vents. I like the texture because it gives the floor depth and makes it look like a real wood floor, not to mention it is not as slippery. This floor is not the most expensive, but also is not cheap and does not look cheap. I plan to do more floor work once I can afford to purchase more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Allure Ultra Good product and easy install. Takes a couple planks to get used to the process but after you got it figured ot it goes down easy. The long joints slide together fairly easily at a slight angle and with minimal wiggling. The short joints on the end are best "clicked" together with a rubber mallet in my opinion. No need to lift previously installed pieces to get a good angle. Just make sure everything is flush and tap straight down on the new piece and they will mate up fine. Like others have stated, make sure your first row or 2 are even and straight and remain fully together. So far no issues with my floor. I installed it directly on conrete. Ordered another 800 sf for upstairs and will be installing that this week. We'll see if it's as easy on plywood that isn't quite as flat as the concrete?? I'm concerned with the thickness of it and how flexible it is and my plywood subfloor not being perfectly flat and the possibility of it showing in perfections. I will leave another review on that install later. Overall good product so far. Way better than the peel and stick junk. My only complaint.. and it's minor.. would be the price. $3/sf is on the top end for this type of floor. But.. maybe you get what you pay for??? Good luck to all!
