Product Overview

IoPhic Universal Smoke Sensing Technology alarms with microprocessor intelligence are designed to virtually eliminate nuisance alarms caused by non-hazardous sources such as every day cooking smoke or steamy showers. Nuisance alarms are the leading reason for intentionally disabled smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms are a key factor in surviving a fire. NEW IOPHIC TECHNOLOGY – Makes conventional alarms obsolete. IoPhic is an ionization alarm containing a patent-pending Universal Smoke Sensing Technology. The first and only single-sensor alarm to respond 87% faster to slow smoldering fires. IoPhic alarms also respond very quickly to fast flaming fires. UL217 Smoldering Smoke Test on 5/26/2010, Underwriters Laboratories Project #09CA38078. Installation of IoPhic alarms virtually eliminates false alarms. Installing IoPhic alarms ensures maximum detection of BOTH types of fires from a single alarm, while eliminating the need for a combination of ionization and photoelectric alarms. Customer Questions & Answers

Does this product have battery backup?

It is unclear if this model has a battery backup or not. The use and care manual seems generic so I cant tell if the description about replacing the backup battery applies to this model or not. Anyone know about the backup battery?
Asked by: Rusty
Yes, this detector has a 9-volt battery backup and comes with a heavy duty battery already installed (not an alkaline). You need to remove the plastic strip from the battery case before the backup battery will work. I suggest opening the battery door to do this as it is difficult to remove the strip otherwise.

Can this alarm have a hardwired unit that will connect communicate with hard wired ones

Asked by: dave
Yes, this detector is capable of communicating with this model and other units made by Universal Security Instruments via a third wire (usually yellow) as detailed in the instructions in the package. All units will then alarm if any one of them detects smoke or a fire. All of the units that are wired together can also be silenced by pressing the button only one of the units. You can then go to each unit, if so desired, and press the test button to determine which one called out the alarm. The unit that detected the smoke or fire will chirp longer than the others. Be advised, this unit will not alarm if connected a CO (carbon monoxide) detector or a combination detector if CO gas is detected. Only units with the CO detection capabilities can alarm simultaneously when a CO leak is detected. The units will all alarm if smoke or a fire is detected by the combination smoke/CO detectors connected to the system.

I just installed two in my house, hardwired with a communication wire between the two. Besides being the most affordable hardwired dual detector type available, the units were well packaged, seem well made and installed in minutes on my existing circuits; even though I had to undo the wire nuts and put the new connectors on. I tested the units with aerosol smoke both on line voltage and just under battery power. They work flawlessly in both cases and are easily silenced once the detectors have cleared. I really like that both units sound the alarm both under smoke test and when the test button is pushed and can also be silence by pushing the button on one unit. This is important because the upper unit is a good ten feet off the ground. I am not sure how many of these you can interconnect but his feature is a leg saver for those with many units installed on one system. We used to have many false alarms on the kitchen due to cooking. I am anxious to see how the "Silence" function that temporarily reduces the detector sensitivity works. All in all, these seem very good. Time will tell how well they perform.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Smoke Alarm on the Planet Best smoke alarm on the planet. I have had clients put these in a number of houses that were getting false alarms all the time. Now they have none. In houses where alarms had been ripped out of the ceilings because of false alarms, now the alarms stay put, changing an unprotected house into a safe one. In my own house we had problems every week: humid days, neighbor firing up his wood boiler, dinner being ready, etc. Now we have no problems at all. Plus, I don't have to run around the house looking for a flashing light that tells me which unit is causing the alarm. A push of the button, on ANY alarm will cause only the offending alarm to beep, making it easy to find. This detector also solves the problem of alarms that are out of reach, as I can silence that alarm from one that is mounted at a more convenient height. Their website says this alarm, according to a university study, is the fastest responding alarm out there to detect fast flaming fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. It responds 87% faster (than required?) for slow smoldering fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. Better than both kinds, and the "Microprocessor Intelligence" might be just a cool way to market it, but it really did eliminate all the false alarms in my home, and my clients' homes.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as advertised I was looking for a 120V smoke alarm for my vacation home WITHOUT a battery backup. When the vacation home is not occupied, I turn off the breaker to the smoke alarm and other unused circuits. I didn't want a battery to run down and beep when the power is off. There is no mention in the description that this smoke alarm has a battery back-up, but it does. If I had not had a huge hassle purchasing it from HD to start with, I would have returned it. Also, the so-called "universal" interconnect wiring harness on this smoke alarm is not so universal. The plug from the smoke alarm I was replacing would not snap securely into this smoke alarm, so I had to pull the wiring apart and use the wiring harness that came with this smoke alarm. Furthermore, the way the mount is made, it is almost impossible to get this alarm to latch onto the included model-specific ceiling mount provided. Finally, the battery back-up I didn't want to start with is another manufacturing/design defect. I removed the battery to get a clearer view of the ceiling mount to try to mount the alarm. When I went to replace the battery, there is a catch to prevent the battery compartment being put back in place without a battery. Even with the battery in place, it would not let the battery compartment slide back in place. I had to insert a thin object to push the catch out of the way in order to re-insert the battery compartment. All in all a big disappointment and too much trouble to be worthwhile. Save your time, aggravation and money and buy a different brand from someone other than Home Depot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Smoke Alarm This is a good smoke alarm for the price. Easy to install; I didn't hard-wire mine. I like the fact that you can easily change the battery w/o having to take the unit apart.
