Hi! Thanks for your question! Depending on the weather conditions it will take about 10-15 minutes before the coals are ready to be poured into the grill and then another 10-15 minutes before the grill will heat up to 500 degrees.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I'll Never Use Fluid Again Perfect for a Smokey Joe but I also use it for a larger grill. I just have to add a few coals to the pile after they're hot. July 12, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A simply awesome tool, just got better! The ease of use, simplicity and convenience of the Original charcoal Chimney Starter, is well known, and has been around for years. With the latest creation of the COMPACT Charcoal Chimney, cooking life is even better. It is an ideal size for traveling, or using around the house, when you don't really need 100 pieces of charcoal burning. It is the perfect size for my Weber, Little Smokey grill, which we use camping. It is an ideal tool, when cooking on your Camp Dutch Ovens. Or if you are grilling on the bigger grills, but really don't need allot of coals to do the job. Compact is the way to go. When pack space is a concern, and you don't need a ton of charcoal to cook your meals, this is perfect tool for the job. I highly recommend it. The compact model is about 1/3 the size of the original chimney starter, and half the price. July 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fantastic product works exactly as described, with no fluid after taste or odors, and with just newspaper as ignition source February 16, 2016
