Customer Questions & Answers

What is the sone rating on this unit when the fan is at the highest setting?

Asked by: Rose
I wanted to know the sones, which is a rating as to the amount of noise the fan generates. CFM's indicate the "sucking" power of the exhaust fan. The CFM rating is in the product info, so I have that but I don't know how it is rated for noise. I've chosen to go with another manufacturer as they were able to answer all of the questions I had, whereas this one did not.

Are the two sides black or gray?

Asked by: Anonymous
nanbee, The sides on this Over the Range Microwave are finished in black. This finish compliments the smoked glass on the front and the control pad as well as the Stainless Steel. Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool home appliance.

What is the maximum size pan I can use in the unit?

I would like to know the maximum dimensions of a pan that I can use when cooking with microwave and when cooking with convection.
Asked by: Rose
Rose, I apologize, but I do not have access to the interior dimensions of this microwave. It is 1.8 cu ft and does offer a 12" turntable. This information should provide a little more clarify on the items it can hold. Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool home appliance.

How many watts is the convection portion of the unit?

Asked by: Rose
Rose, Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool Over the Range Microwave. The wattage on this microwave is referring to the microwave use. This model can use up to 1100 watts. For convection cooking, the heat distributed in the cavity of the oven would depend on the temperature setting that you choose to bake/roast your food items. Thank you for opportunity to answer your question.

Customer Reviews

1.8 cu. ft. Over the Range Convection Microwave in Stainless Steel, with Sensor Cooking-DISCONTINUED is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best appliace I've ever owned We live in a 35' motorhome. The old convection microwave that was in the motor home died leaving us with no oven at all, no hood vent, no light, no microwave. It was miserable, but we started researching to find the best quality Over The Range Convection Microwave we could find within our budge. We found this unit and compared it to others - hands down this was the absolute best deal. When my husband got it installed we were ecstatic! I've baked bread, used virtually every feature , and just have to say that this one does it all. Favorite feature - the steam/simmer; perfect rice, polenta, grits, veggies. I love the fact that it bakes evenly, and interior cleans easily. The vent fan is really amazing. I love the cooldown feature, the warm & hold, the melt/soften feature, and how beautiful it looks! My husband loves that I can now cook all of our favorite foods perfectly and that makes this passionate cook a very very happy camper! Oh - and it makes perfect pizza using a pizza stone on the round rack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great overall product We are enjoying the convection/microwave. This is the first time we have had a convection oven. We really like not having to heat up the oven for baking small batches of food. It works well and we are glad we decided to go with the addition of the convection oven. Many thanks for a good product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consumer report got it right I looked at this model due to the recommendation from consumer reports. Their report was spot on. It does cook food more evenly and the convection oven feature is super!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good convection/microwave, but a bit loud Ordered and received this unit a little over a month ago. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. It looks great, it's easy to use and cooks good. (I haven't tried the convection yet, but hope to soon). The only issue I have is with the fan noise. The fan automatically runs when the microwave runs and it's louder than what I'm used to. I do have it venting up through the overhead vent, so I insulated the venting in the cabinet above. Since I'm not using the front vents, I was able to remove the front bezel and put some noise dampening material in there to lessen the noise. It's a lot better with these small modifications. Other than that, the unit is really nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Missing a few key features. I picked this microwave because of the convection oven feature. I expected that this microwave would have all of the features of other lower-end microwaves+ the convection oven, but it's actually missing some obvious features my cheap microwave had. 1. There is no 1-button cook function. Before, I could push just "1" or "2" and so on to automatically cook on high for 1 or 2 minutes. Now I have to enter 1-0-0-start to cook for 1 minute. 2. At the end of every cooking cycle, to go back to having the clock displayed, I have to push "cancel". Otherwise, it displays a messaging telling me to enter more time to continue cooking on the same program, and then eventually displays COOK and 00:00:00. 3. The fan comes on very loudly for all microwave cooking. I expected this for the convection oven, but even for a 10 second microwave cooking, the fan comes on and the metal vent flap blows open (it vents to the outside, which is good). It's loud enough that even on low, you can easily hear it in the next room. On the plus side, 1. Once the cooking completes and the end time starts to beep, if I open the door it stops beeping. 2. It cooks fast. 1:30 seconds brings 1 cup of water to a near boil, 2 minutes cooks a bowl of oatmeal. 3. It comes with a metal stand and rack for use in the convection mode and also a plastic steamer pan. 4. It's possible to turn the beep and end timer off, if you want. You'll know it's done when the fan sound stops. So I can recommend this microwave if you really want the convection oven (and if you're hard of hearing, that's even better), but be warned about the missing features.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sorry, but... I'm not sorry I bought this, however there is nothing in the manual on how to work with the convection. When you turn it on it defaults to 4 hours. I have a college degree and can't figure out how to make it run fo 10 minutes to heat my pizza. There was a minor dent in it when I got it. Judging by the location and the good condition of the packing material I assume it left the factory that way. All that said we do like the ability to use convection, the company just needs to take the time to work on drastically improving the operating instructions. I have read several reviews that state this - I just wonder if the company reads them...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great features but not explained very well... We replaced a seven year old Gold Whirlpool Microwave unit with this new convection model. We have the Gold series 2dr refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, range and clothes washer and dryer as well. PROBLEM: The convection/ microwave "how to use" is sadly lacking on a $500 appliance. Recipes [convection] would be appreciated as well! Strongly suggest you consider a CD Tutorial....

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice Microwave but with some significant flaws... As far as functionality goes, this microwave oven works well. It is powerful and large. It cooks fairly evenly. It defrosts without partially cooking the food. While the exterior front is stainless, the interior is not. Neither are the sides. The sides are black and because the microwave sticks out from the cabinet several inches, you can see the black sides. This takes away from the appearance in my opinion. The oven has several accessories that must be stored. Their is a round tray that sits on the turntable for convection use. There is also a rack that should be removed when not being used. I asked why and I was told the reason is that if you cook popcorn, the bag can displace the rack as it expands. If this happens, it can cause the rack to touch the walls of the microwave oven, which can cause serious damage to the oven. This is something important to be aware of. My main two gripes with this oven are as follows: First, the over range light is horrible. Not bad but HORRIBLE! I can't stress this enough. It is VERY dim and positioned toward the rear of the range. You cannot see what you are cooking! It is really that bad. My wife was frying some ground beef and could not tell when it was cooked. She had to take the pan off the stove and bring it over the sink to see it. This is a serious flaw with this oven and you won't know it until you install it. Because most stores don't have these plugged in, you can't try it before you buy it. Once you install this oven, you can't return it. So beware. Even if you could replace the bulb with the brighter one, the position of the bulb is at the far rear so it only lights the rear burners. Where do you do most cooking tasks? On the front burners. The bulb itself; it is an oddball. The socket is slightly larger than a candelabra and very hard to find. So good luck finding a brighter bulb. I did come up with a suitable fix but it cost me an additional $50. I installed an LED light bar at the bottom front of the microwave. It provides much better lighting than the built in light. But short of wiring it in and voiding the warranty, you have another switch and a wall transformer to deal with plus the wiring to the light bar. Besides, a $500+ microwave should not require after-market modifications to be usable. Now for my second gripe. The oven has a lot of automated functions for softening butter, cream cheese, reheating, defrosting, etc. They work very well. So why the gripe? To use them, you press the desired function then you must wait for instructions scroll across the screen asking you how many sticks of butter, or the side of the steak you are defrosting or whatever. The scrolling is slow, even at the fastest speed and because only a few letters display at a time, it takes a long time to read through the questions, answer them and start your task. It is not very user friendly. Even if you know what you want to do, you can't skip ahead on some menus. It's a real pain. If you can get past the drawbacks, it is a decent microwave and although Whirlpool and Maytag are the same company now, this oven doesn't fill with moisture like the Maytag models. Also, the fan has 5 speeds and while the higher speeds are very loud, the lowest 2 speeds are reasonably quiet. Now you must decide if this oven is for you but at least you know what to expect.
