According to the directions, and according to my experience, you need to test the current coating. If water beads on it, then it needs to be stripped before re-coating. This is an oil base coating which has to be absorbed by the wood. If water beads on the old coating, then the new coating will not be absorbed into the wood. ( Latex coatings sit on top of the wood). Don't use Deckbrite...use Deckstrip. I used Deckstrip with a power washer and it completely stripped the old coating. Re-coating after that worked beautifully. If you re-coat on a surface that beads water you'll have a mess. The coating will sit on top of the old coating, take a long time to dry, and will not be absorbed by the wood.
Again, according to directions and experience, you only apply one coat. I used a deck brush. Dip it into a 5 gallon bucket of coating, drip it onto the surface, and work it into the wood with the (stiff) deck brush, by brushing the coating INTO the wood. If you put on a second coat, you'll have the same mess described above. Hope this helps

Answer:
One gallon of Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative covers approximately 150-200 square feet. However, this number varies with the type of wood and porosity. This being said a 5-gallon pail will cover about 750-1000 square feet.

How does this Wolman product endure in tests versus your Behr solid stain you rate as a 10/25 year product? I don't see it promoted much anymore.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Been using it over 13 years About the deck; As of 2016 it is about 17 years old, 400 sq. ft. with wood railings, 1 story above ground, CCA pressure treated wood. It is in North Jersey. We get blazing hot humid summers and wicked snowy winters. We've lived there 13 years. When we moved in the deck was gray and looked as if it had never been treated. I used the Wolmans DECKBRITE, followed instructions and used Wolmans F&P cedar colored semi-transparent stain. The difference was night and day... it was beautiful. Since then I have re-done it about every 2 to 3 years. The floor looks great for about a year, and looks OK the second year. The railings look great for about 3-4+ years. The floor beads water for up to 3 years. Every time I re-do it, I use Wolmans deck brite and a power washer. I use a stiff bristle deck brush (long handle) and splash the stain onto the deck from a bucket and use the brush to "grind" it into the wood along the grain. After about 13 years I sanded the tops of the railings to reduce "splintering".I read a zillion reviews of other products and was never convinced to try something other than Wolmans. It NEVER peels because it is an oil based stain. I don't think it's expensive. I wish it looked great for 3 to 4 years but I'm convinced nothing does. It's work, but it has kept my deck intact for many years, thus I'm satisfied with it. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rich, dark color that repels water. It has been on the deck for almost a month now. It still is holding it's color and has not peeled or faded in any way. It was easy to apply. I put on two coats. Aside from the faint odor of oil stain, I am very pleased with the outcome. I do not expect to see a 3-year duration, but will definitely apply this same stain in the future. I am very happy with the appearance and ease of use. The price was reasonable compared to most. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent application and Color This product has excellent richness in color and no overlap problems. Unlike water base sealers, the linseed oilbased product disipates over time, making removal of the product evironmentally friendly. I have been using this product for several years. Because it is an oilbased sealer it will absorb into the deck based on the moisture of the wood and back wiping excess product is esential. My joy in using the product along with my customers satisfaction in look ensures I will use it as long as they will make it! November 15, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by this oil stain turned out better than I expected after receiving via mail on my front porch....I have a large deck on the back of the house....I used a spray washer adn cleaned it off then let it set fora couple of day...and then brushed the stain on....it's very good stain penatrated the wood and looks awesome....the wood now looks better than when it was new....i'm sold on this product.....the price and quality of the product was just right....I completed all of the deck 800 sq feet with the 5 gallons..... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Stain, beautiful color, Goes on easily Wolmans F&P Stain is so easy to use. I have stained my Gazebo with it and my fence. I have gotten compliments saying it looks like a professional did the work. I have tried other stains and they went on awful. I will only use F&P for now on. The color natural does go on darker than what you might expect for natural color, but it does lighten some over time and regardless the color is rich and beautiful. My father is doing his fence next with it he loves mine so much! September 11, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I would recomend this product I have stained my cedar sided home 3 times with a latex stain and it does not last long where the sun shines on it for long periods. This oil base seemed to penitrate the cedar and I am very please with the look. I used the natural color witch darkened the sideing and am well pleased. May 3, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to apply We rolled our flat bed semi trailer decks with this and it worked great. Application was easy and everything coated uniformly with out much effort. Clean up the excess with a rag and some mild cleaner and you have a great looking finish. May 28, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by love the color easy to apply great color just keep stirring I believe would be a great seller as a regular stocked item as its good for 3 years May 21, 2013
