No it will not work on a dead circuit. I tested this while labeling outlets. To confirm I had the right outlet I powered down the circuit and you can watch the sending unit go offline / the scan tool no longer picks it up.

IMHO it would have been much more versatile if the sending unit was also battery powered, then it could be used on a dead circuit. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very easy to use This breaker finder kit is very easy to use. It comes with a small instructional CD, which I haven't looked at to be honest. Just plug the box into your live socket (it comes with several adapters), then take the yellow device to you breaker box and slowly move it over the breakers. The device will beep and show the green LED when you are on the correct breaker. It is a little more difficult with double breakers, but if you do it slowly it still works well. July 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My new favorite tool This is probably one of my favorite electronic tools that I now own. Gone are the days of plugging a light into an outlet and running into the garage to turn off one breaker at a time until the light went out. Or having to get my wife to stand by the outlet and yell when I finally found the right breaker. This circuit breaker finder reminds me a lot of the Zircon cable tracer I have to trace Cat5 and Cat3 cables. It seems to be based on the same premise of sending a signal over the wires that the detector can pick up on the other end without making physical contact with the wiring. Kind of like turning the wiring into a broadcast antenna and using an FM radio to pick up the signal. Everything is packed neatly in foam inside of an aluminum metal case which latches shut. It looks like a miniature poker chip case. I figured everything would be inside of a fabric bag of some sort and did not expect such a nice storage box for it. The foam is cut out to accommodate the various adapters and pieces. It comes with a DVD tutorial (which I will probably never watch). It even comes with a battery! The only negative I can find about this unit is that the circuit needs to have power in order for the transmitter to work. So, if you're doing new construction and want to map out your wiring runs this would be important to keep in mind. It would be amazing if Zircon made it possible to pop a 9 volt battery in the transmitter box. It certainly seems large enough to hold one. Using the sensor is so simple. You select the necessary outlet plugs and connect them to the two leads on the transmitter, plug them into the outlet and wait for the red LED to turn solid. Go to your breaker panel and run the detector wand across each breaker to calibrate it. Then move the detector across each breaker one-by-one. Once it beeps and turns green you've found your breaker. Turn it off and go back to the transmitter and make sure the red LED is now off. If you're using the included light socket adapter make sure the light switch is turned on. Obviously, if it isn't turned on the transmitter won't work. Simple, fast, and efficient. The best part is I don't have to bother my wife anymore. July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Made labeling easy! I have been threatening to get my electrical panel straightened out for some time. This tool made the job easy. I had tried a couple of other times with my wife's help and two cellphones and what a waste of time. This time I was done in about 30 minutes. This is great for the homeowner, but it seems like a "must have" for the professional. Glad I got this!! July 30, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works great, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS This is one of those "boy I wish I had it a decade ago" tools. I walked around the workshop and numbered all 16 electrical outlet covers with sharpie (#1, #2, etc. etc.)... then I was able to pin point the exact breaker they tied to and label it on the box. I did have some initial headaches though and almost ended up with a very badly mis-labeled box. After I had finished testing all 16 outlets I was really worried about what appeared to be an overloaded circuit. I decided to sit down and read the instructions and I had missed something very important. (What a guy thing to do.... use it first, then read the instructions). When you first connect everything up and power on the tester you need to scan the WHOLE BOX so it can calibrate... THEN you scan the box again to find the correct circuit. I had mistakenly taken the first hit on the first pass over the box... but that was a calibration tone not a hit tone. I went back and re-tested all 16 outlets and the final product is much better. The kit includes a standard two-prong outlet adapter and alligator clip adapters. I tested several 20A outlets (NEMA 5-20P style... the kind where one blade is sideways) and could not get a hit. I'm not sure if this kit cannot test 20A outlets, or if those outlets are dead (I have nothing that requires 20A so they just sit unused). The comes packaged in an excellent hardshell case that makes storage real easy. August 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works like a champ I work in maintainence at a very old resort originally built in 1936. The property has been updated, renovated and remodeled more times than Joan Rivers. If by chance you can read the label on the inside of a breaker panel ... Chances are it's not labeled correctly anyway. After borrowing a VERY expensive circuit tracer kit one time I realized what an incredible time saver these can be. I decided I had to have one. Do yourself a favor and read the instructions, watch the video too. There is a certain procedure to follow and it works. If you don't follow the directions... It doesn't work... Period!!! My first test of this kit was on some outdoor site lighting. I needed to find a breaker in a panel several hundred feet away through 2 locked gates a flight of stairs and 2 locked doors. Of the 30 breakers in the panel this was the last one I would have picked since it was labeled "East site lights" and I was on the West side of the area I was working on. I hit pay dirt on the first run. August 13, 2014
