The wood is warped. It is made up of many pieces that have all come apart. I have had mine for three years and I am going to have to replace them now. I thought about using finishing nails to put them back together but some of the top pyramid parts have winged up on the sides. I used a very good deck stain.

We bought 18 of these caps for our deck at the end of the 2013 season. All of them have fallen apart and warped in less than one year.

I purchased 8 caps 2 weeks ago. At this point 5 of the eight have cracks greater than a 1/4 inch. Of the remaining 3, only one has zero cracks. An earlier comment recommends staining/painting with an oil-based paint. The pressure treating prohibits this for a period of time. By then, the cracking has already begun

Pathetic Chinese manufactured garbage. All 8 post caps I installed failed within 60 days. Some warped and cracked moderately, while others failed in dramatic fashion. The only salvation was HD allowed me to return the product. I wish the rating sytem allowed for something worse than poor.

I've been using various styles of these for years....people you must seal these with solid color stain (good) or (best) oil based primer and exterior semi gloss or the best possible ext clear finish. they will not crack or turn black, if you have a clue and do it right. attach to posts with liquid nails. they will last for years.......
