Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Is it safe to eat fruit or vegetables grown in contact with the treated lumber?

I want to build an arbor to grow grapes
Asked by: PinballHornet
Safe or not safe is irrevelent if you put heavy black plastic or coat inner planks with plastic roof coat. I did both things at different times not just to stop leaching but to stop the plank from sucking the moisture out of the soil. Prevents plants from drying out in dry spells and prevents lumber from rotting. I used #3 oak boards that lasted 12 yrs. The roof coat is the best because when you till you don't have to worry about tearing up your plastic sheeting.

Do they cut 4x4s at the store for customers?

Hi, I'm happy to answer your question. Yes, Home depot does cut wood. How ever they do not offer precision cuts, so the tolerance is 1/2 inch to any and all cuts for the dimensions requested.

They say "ground contact" which I guess not part in ground. But, I think this post makes a good start for a fence...and, that means part in ground. Is it safe and "lasting" if in ground in cement?

Unfortunately, the lumber I find at HD is always a bit "wonky." I had to go through literally 35 4x4's to find 6 decent ones!

The product was at a height that is just above my shoulders. The posts were enclosed with straps that were severed but they still were in the way making it harder to remove one of the posts. 2. I needed one cut to make the post 36 inches for my project. The operator cut the post for me but it was almost a half inch too long. I took the post as is hoping the extra length wouldn't matter as I was setting a mailbox in the ground.

They are not the highest quality but for my purpose (used for edging/framing planting beds) they worked out perfect and since I caught them on sale the price was right. The ones I got had a lot of moisture in them so I let them bake in the sun for a few days before installing. Surprisingly there was very little warping after drying out. I was still able to use the ones that did show some twists by cutting them for shorter runs.

But like every other so-called "pressure-treated" product on offer over the last 15-20 years, if it is in contact the ground in an area subject to moisture - like maybe outside - it's gonna rot rather sooner than later. If using as fence posts, I always coat several inches above and below the ground level with an asphalt sealer which really inhibits the rot. Otherwise a good product.

Whatever you do don't let the assistant get one for you, they picked one up for me and brought it out and put it in my truck. When I got home I realized it was warped and twisted, it was virtually useless. Not worth the effort to take it back to the store because I live too far away. So I guess next time I'll go see the other guys across the street, they're more friendly there anyways.

I picked the ones I needed, gave the measurements to the Home Depot employee, and he cut them in no time flat! Free of charge! Came home, unloaded them, and placed them out to form my flower bed. I drilled holes in the middle and ends and used spikes to hold the bed in place. So happy with my new flower bed!

I've heard of hidden inflation in products, but not on something so easily checkable.
