I am getting ready to use Granite Grip over existing old outside chattahoochee 10X35 covered patio. I plan to pressure wash, etch with muriatic acid and the apply a recommended concrete bonding primer. Is this what I should be using before three coats of Granite Grip? Please advise.

I heard bonding primer is not supposed to go over existing paint. My basement has some old paint still I can't scrap off, can this be used on it or is there an option that can go on concrete and old paint? not sure if I should just go try regular latex primer because of existing paint.
Asked by: Jay
Hi Jay, Thanks for writing in with your question. The Bonding Primer should only be used on bare concrete, and painted areas should be avoided. The primer needed or recommended will depend on the paint (topcoat) that you will be using. Please reach out to us directly so that we can get more details about your project. Regards, Giovanna

Is this material applied after etching the concrete?
Asked by: bob
Yes, after etching the concrete you apply the primer. I followed up with concrete stain on my driveway and walkway and I would not recommend it for heavy traffic areas like these. It picked up the tire marks and leaves in the driveway left stains. I spent a lot of time, energy, and money on this project and am very disappointed with the results.

Beware - you are in for trouble or a lot more work if you have a worn, previously painted concrete floor. Here is the problem - I have a floor that was painted with polyurethane floor paint. It was badly worn, down to the concrete in about half the area. The instructions say (in bold) not to use this on previously painted surfaces - so I asked the guys at the paint counter if i could just spot apply this to the bare concrete "Yes, sure!" was the reply. Wrong. This stuff kind of has a mild paint remover effect and so spot application leads to the paint at the edge of the spot coming off the surface. So, one step forward, two steps back, now i have to wipe this off with solvent, and go back in and using stripper, remove all of the old paint. Incredible pain i.t.a. and made the project much longer. Bottom line - don't listen to the guys at the HD paint counter! Believe the instructions on the can.

I rolled on the primer on Monday and then applied the concrete stain on Tuesday. The stain went on smoothly and easily due to the primer creating a bottom coat for the stain to cling to without just being "sucked into" the concrete. The primer went further than I expected so I had a bit left over; I had been worried I might run out but was pleasantly surprised at how well it went on and covered well. It is too early to say if the primer will help the stain last longer than it would have if I had omitted the primer step. It was recommended in the written instructions so I went with it to do the best job possible.

The product may not have been required, but it was cheap and easy to apply, so a no brainer. I put it down as heavy as you can expect for a product that's about as thin a water. I had to be careful because it splashed a bit coming out, but no harm. It's the primer and not the paint, so I didn't care. I got a good coat down and gave it an overnight to dry. I'm in Colorado, so dry time is shorter than in states with appreciable levels of humidity. I can't speak on how well it did in terms of helping prep the floor for the epoxy because I haven't put any harsh traffic on it yet. So far, everything looks perfect. I used a lower/mid grade brush and roller to apply; I didn't feel the need to go for the upper end stuff since this is the primer. (Side note, I used the same quality with the epoxy and it looks perfect too!)
