Q:What grade of wood is this? E.g. Number 2 & better, stud, etc.

    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Generally these are bought as 2&btr but some mills use other proprietary grades. We re-sort all of our lumber prior to treating as well and remove pieces that don't conform to our internal specifications.

Q:I want to use these as buried posts. I understand they are rated for ground contact, but what if the buried end has been cut? Is this okay without additional treatment, or should I plan to only bury un-cut ends?
      by|Apr 8, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  you should always try to not bury the cut end. In either case you need to use end cut solution to treat all cut ends of treated lumber. thanks

Used as fence posts, rotted in 2 years.
I installed 30 of these for a large fence in my yard, it's been two years since and I've had to replace 12 of them so far. The completely rotted out where they contacted the ground. I'm not sure how they get away with calling them "rated for ground contact" because they will absolutely fail. In an attempt to recoup some money I investigated the warranty policy with McFarland Cascade and their Lifetime warranty does not cover damage if the wood is "used as fence posts". The warranty information can be found under the "info & guides" section on the Home Depot page. I wouldn't trust these to contact the ground in any application.

Posts seem to be better quality than the 2x4 from a straightness standpoint. Recommend predrill holes before screwing but make excellent fence posts. Cuts fine on a miter saw no restrictions.

We used these for a deer fence around a raised bed garden. After applying a stain it looks great.

I used pressure treated 4"x4"x8' posts to build handrails for our timber/paver steps and our cement steps. The posts were set in concrete for added strength to support the handrails. I also used these PT post to protect against termites, decay and rot. I used these PT post two weeks ago and really impressed with the results.
