QUIKRETE® Fireplace Mortar can be lime washed once it has been fired. Please note – even the black mortar will lighten to gray as it is being heat treated – this may be adequate for your application.

Can this product be used to set firebricks on the concrete or glue fire bricks together?

Answer

Quikrete Fireplace Repair Mortar is a silicate based refractory cement caulk for tuck-pointing damaged fireplace mortar joints and repairing cracked or chipped firebricks in fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. I have cracks in fire bricks on an hearth insert as well as chipping, deteriorating bricks in the center. Right product?

Asked by Daniel November 4, 2018
1
Answer

QUIKRETE® Fireplace Repair Mortar is suitable for cracks in the firebox not exceeding 1/8” in width, regardless of surface area. It is not intended to repair chipping areas or deteriorating bricks. Products that will directly be in contact with the high heat, should be made of refractory cement. Refractory cement is designed to be able to withstand exposure to high temperatures.

Does this meet ASTM C 199 standards?

Asked by LPVenem August 20, 2016
1
Answer

QUIKRETE® Fireplace Mortar (No. 8620-21) is a repair product to cover hairline cracks in higher temperature environments as opposed to a true refractory mortar that would be covered in ASTM C199 – Standard Test Method for Pier Test for Refractory Mortars. QUIKRETE® Fireplace Mortar (No. 8620-21) is certified to ASTM E136 – Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a Vertical Tube Furnace at 750°C, not ASTM C199.
