A:  Because it is "Fir" not pine, not oak, not maple, etc. Get the idea? It is harvested generally from the Douglas Fir tree which is the most plentiful and structurally strongest of the various softwoods growing in the US and is a preferred material for structural lumber for its strength and workability. There are several different species of fir in the US as well as at least 4 or 5 hemlock/fir combination species which are also used for general building and are relatively interchangable with the more common Douglas Fir though they may have a slightly diffent coloration. Fir is dimentionally stable and recognized for its high strength to weight ratio as indicated by it's close, long, and straight grain with few if any knots and minimal amounts of softer wood between the grain.
