Q:I need to use this as a return air wall cover. Can I modify this so it can't be closed? (Maybe remove the damper on the back?)

A: Looks like I'm going to answer my own question - Just discovered DC does make a 14x6 air return without the damper, but HD doesn't carry it. That will work for walls, but need one a little more heavy duty for floor, this one might work if I can modify damper.

A: Short answer is yes. The register is stamped steel, not "cast iron", but with a finish that appears to look like antique cast iron. The internal damper material is plastic, and could easily be removed. However, I'm sure that would void any warranty.

A: Yes, but this is not a cast iron register. It's a textured black painted steel register, which has a cast iron look.

A: yes, In the picture of the vent, they are located down in the most forward front finger holes. They move left to right to control the flow, you can't angle the air flow. Unit is well made and looks very vintage when installed in a similar surrounding room

A: Yes it does. There are two tabs that open and close the damper they are located on the end just below the scroll work so it doesn’t take away from the look of the cover. Very happy with the quality and appearance of this product.

A: Inside

A: The stated size of any register or cold air return is the vent opening size. The register or cold air return is over sized to help cover vent openings that are slightly irregular.

A: They will certainly hold up (very sturdy)....adjuster does not stick out ....very pleased with our purchase

A: The adjuster does not stick up above the register.
The only worry about foot traffic would be scratches but our grate is still looking new.

A: I didn't install this on the floor, but it's pretty solid and would probably be fine. The switch probably sticks out 1/4 inch, so likely wouldn't be a problem.

A: These are pretty sturdy, I have one in my kitchen that I step on all the time. It is holding up really well. The adjustment lever is below the top surface of the grate, it does not stick up. The surface plate is metal and the adjustable fins & surrounding box is made of plastic. As long as your openings are tight, you should have no problems.

A: Yes it holds up and it's good for an area that's frequently walked on. The adjuster stick is right even with it.

A: Yes, there is a small plastic tab inside one of the triangle shaped openings that allows you to slide it open and closed.
by|Feb 4, 2020
A: Yes, it can be opened and closed. There are black plastic tabs that stick up behind the grate just enough that you can get your fingers on them to slide them back and forth. That opens and closes the vent.
by|May 6, 2023
A: Yes. It has a small handle that you reach through the opening and control the air flow.
by|May 6, 2023
A: Yes, the vent can be manually opened and closed. The scroll cover attaches to a plastic louvered damper. The damper is slid open/ closed in a horizontal manner by 2 small black plastic tabs just barely inside the triangular-shaped opening at one end of the register. The tabs are marked by green tape in the attached picture.

A: Yes you can manually open and close the register.
The inside fins are made of plastic so they don not make a good seal, The register has a nice appearance.
