Q:I replaced a metal tub drain. I put the putty under the rim, it squished out when tightened as expected. My Q is, it must have squished down the threads as well when tightened. The pipe under the tub is pvc. It says don?t use on plastic. So is this bad?

      Answer This Question

A:  I don't believe the plumbers putty will damage the PVC pipe, I believe what they are referring to is that the putty won't work well for sealing PVC pipe and fittings.

A:  From your description, it sounds like you used a bit too much of the putty. In similar installations, I've found that a rolled rope, about the thickness of a pencil, provides more than enough material to work with. Any excess is removed before final fitting.

        by|Feb 13, 2022

A:  You should use the other putty,in the blue and white container, it's safe for plastic and stone

          by|Nov 21, 2023

A:  It's intended to seal between the drain and tub, Any extra that may have gotten on to the plastic fittings does not affect the seal. You should be fine.

                            Answer This Question

A:  Once out of the container and used as a bedding compound for strainers, faucets and tub waste and overflows, the putty will remain pliable when it is not exposed to air. If the putty is exposed to air for an extended period of time, it will harden and become brittle.

A:  Plumbers putty is to seal drain assemblies not hose bibs with potable water. If you want to seal connections on a hose bib, you'll want something that is appropriate for that use. Since you don't mention what exactly you are looking to do, I can't offer any other advise.

                                  by|May 31, 2021

A:  Do not use plumbers putty on any pipe threads, including a hose bib. It is very unlikely it would be able to contaminate you in-house water supply but it will harden over time. In this application I would use a Teflon based pipe thread sealant. When you apply your water supply pressure to your new hose bib this positive pressure will not allow the sealant to contaminate your in-house water.

A:  This should not be applied to a hose bib. It will have no effect whatsoever.

A:  40F for application. It can be applied in colder conditions but would recommend storing in warmer area until applying the putty to the drain. Knead the putty before applying to ensure pliability.

A:  The only thing mentioned in the instructions is: If putty is being used in colder applications, wait 10 minutes after the initial installation and confirm the product doesn’t need a little extra turn to properly secure.

                                        by|Mar 11, 2021

A:  Low temperature shouldn't be a problem once it installed. If the putty is cold when you install it you might want to warm it in a bowl of hot water.

A:  I would not use plumbers putty to seal pipe threads. It might seal the threads but it will eventually harden and make it very difficult to unscrew the pipe at a later date. Always use a Teflon formula pipe thread sealant on pipe threads. I did this sort of work for many years, before retiring.

A:  NO!! They are two different kinds of products!! Pipe thread sealant is more like caulking compound with the consistency of toothpaste whereas plumber's putty is more like clay or Silly Putty. It may work on pipe threads but I would not count on it!

A:  I don't recommend using plumbers putty for pipe sealant. It might work most of the time, but a better choice would be to use teflon tape or regular pipe sealant. The plumbers putty can wash out over time and leak. It's much better for bedding sink drains and similar applications where there is no pressure.
