Q:I have a 2" deep stud wall. Will this 3" product work or will it put too much pressure on the sheet rock and screws holding it?
by|Jan 15, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  The 3" product would put too much pressure on the sheet rock, risking screw pops. Additionally, the R-Value of any insulation is reduced when squished into a cavity. You could get ROCKWOOL's thermal products and filet them down the middle, giving you too much thinner batts of insulation. This is the solution I used at my cottage in a few tight spaces. Use a serrated knife to make the cutting of the insulation easier.

Q:Can this be used to make sound boards for a pole barn?

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes. We have seen a large number of sound boards built for all different purposes. The insulation used as sound panels will definitely assist in dampening some of the noise in the barn.

Q:Can the sheets be cut into smaller lengths or widths to accomodate smaller applications ? What would you recommend using to cut them ? Thanks !

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello Frank, ROCKWOOL batts can be cut into the shape and size you need. The easiest way to cut the insulation is to use a serrated knife just like a bread knife. Home Depot will have an insulation knife available in their tools area. If the knife has serrated teeth, it will carve the insulation like a loaf of bread and leave you with a machine quality cut. The rule of thumb. Measure the physical space and trim the batt 1” wider than the physical spacing to ensure a good pressure fit. Q:CAN THIS BE INSTALLED OVER AND AROUND IN-CEILING SPEAKERS WITH EXPOSED CONNECTIONS OR WOULD I NEED TO CREATE A HOUSING?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hello Steve, This is not a typical application. The insulation should be installed between the ceiling framing. I would recommend reaching out to the speaker’s manufacturer for guidance on having insulation in direct contact and if they potentially require an air space clearance around “exposed connections”.

Q:Will two layers reduce more sound? If so how much reduction in decibels?

                Answer This Question

A:  Hi Rozzana... yes two 3" layers of ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound would perform similarly to one layer of 6" which out performs one 3" layer at lower frequencies of sound when comparing the noise reduction coefficients of both thicknesses (data on technical data sheet). That said it is difficult to put a decibel value to this since it is always best to analyze the sound performance of the entire system as oppose to the insulation as a standalone. This is primarily because a typical wall or floor/ceiling assembly would comprise of different material types (gypsum, studs etc.) each of which reacts differently to sound. These assembly ratings are analyzed and rated using the STC rating (sound transmission class), STC 45 and above is a common target for residential applications. Have a look at our acoustic wall assemblies catalog for examples of systems we have actually tested. If you are still unsure about STC ratings feel free to reach out to our technical services line at 877-823-9790: https://p-cdn.rockwool.com/syssiteassets/o2-rockwool/documentation/technical-guides/commercial/acoustic-wall-assemblies-catalog-techincal-guide.pdf?f=20230725143316
