Q:I potted coneflower/hosta from pots into root pouches. I live in Indianapolis, IN. In the winter temperatures are routinely near or below freezing. On occasion the temperature dips to as cold as 20 below. Should I put these pouches below ground level?

A: Good morning
Thank you for your interest in Root Pouch products.
Our Boxer brown line of pots do a great job of insulating roots during cold winters but you can always add that extra bit of insurance by planting in the ground. That being said our Boxer brown line of pots are 100% recycled water bottles so they will not draw water from the surrounding soil so you will need to water these directly into the pouch. The other thing I have customers do for cold weather is over winter their pots indoors such as the garage if that's at all possible.
I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions

Our fabric pots are great for growing all sorts of veggies and they are great for potatoes but we usually recommend our #15 gallon pots as you will need the depth. Its recommended to have 15 to 16 inches of depth to grow potatoes successfully
Hope that helps

A: Yes. I'm growing potatoes right now and also grew them for the first time last year. The 15 gallon bags work perfectly and I got a pretty good harvest :-)

Thank you for your interest in Root Pouch products.
Our pots handles are quite strong but they cannot be used to pull the pots as they will fail when used that way. A fully planted 65 gallon pots could weigh well over 100 pounds so not really movable unless using a fork lift and I will be honest the weight and jiggling of the pot when using a forklift will potentially break the handles.
The handles on our large pots are made to ease the planting of the pots. Holding them open is easier with a handle.
Hope that info helps

A: They are strong enough. The very large ones get very heavy when filled with dirt so we needed to pull with our tractor but 200 gallons and under can be pulled to a new location by hand. I have some that are a few years old now and are as strong as when I first got them.

A: This size was much larger than I thought. It was about 2/3 full when I realized that I should make sure I could move it. I wasn’t able to move it easily, so I stopped filling it with soil. I would definitely buy a smaller size, probably one that is less than 45 gallons. I use 15-gallon size for each tomato plant.

A: Yes, you can. There are handles to pull them to a new location. I wouldn't try to lift --- too heavy. They are well made and tough.

Thank you for your interest in Root Pouch products.
We have many growers that use our pots in very cold climates above ground and their plants thrive.
I think your small trees will do great in our pots through the winter
