Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Suzy. Varathane Classic Wood Stain can be applied to an outdoor wooden gate, however the wooden gate must be bare wood and after applying the stain, Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane must be applied. Varathane Stain absorbs into the wood, Spar Urethane is a clear coating that products the wood from moisture and harmful UV rays. Refer to the Spar Urethane label to see how many coats are required.

Q:I applied the espresso finish to my sanded wood coffee table and it was so much lighter than the stain on the can. Do i need a 2nd coat and will that make it darker? Does each subsequent coat keep getting darker?

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, James. If a darker shade of Varathane Espresso Classic Wood Stain is desired, an additional coat can be applied. Apply the stain across the grain until the wood is saturated on top, allow the stain to remain on the surface a few minutes. Wipe the excess stain off in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let the stain dry before wiping off the excess. If a third coat is desired, wait 2 hours, do not sand stain between coats.

A: Happy to help, Janet! To ensure proper drying and appearance, all excess stain needs to be wiped away after a few moments. If excess stain is on the surface, it can remain tacky and clean rags and mineral spirits should be used to help remove it. Softer woods may require a wood conditioner to prevent a blotchy or uneven appearance. Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain must also be applied only when relative humidity is below 85%.
