For one the wood would be fine if stacked properly and doesn't look like pick up sticks after everyone looks for the perfect board. for 2 it's easy to work with... you can pull some of the customer damage out depending what ya build and use screws... pre drill if it cracks or avoid the knots. 2x2... you are gonna get nasty inconvenient knots... use #1 pine if ya don't want knots. it's a piece of wood more solid and useful than the Hershey bar ya bought for 25 cents more.

Get what you pay for!!!!
If your going to Build an expensive looking item, then go buy expensive looking lumber. Don't buy these cheaper boards and expect an expensive looking item to be built out of them and then come on here and complain about them cause you were to cheap to buy the good ones. You are getting what you pay for. I build dog houses, green houses, pipe racks, etc. and stuff like that, where it really doesn't matter what it looks like with these and they work GREAT... Don't blame the boards for your own cheapness and or incompetency.. Wow people, really..... Its a cheap board for a cheap project.... Not a swiss watch!!!!

If used for their intended purpose, they are great!
These are firring strips. They are not for appearance or finishing. If you buy these for such a cheap price and expect them not to split, warp or twist, you should buy some quality finishing boards. These are intended for attaching behind drywall, ceiling and roof panels. I also find them handy for shimming around a tub & shower combo to make it flush with the wall.

Average quality
Looks like 50% of these twisted or wrapped or have significant size cracks - takes a lot of time to find a good one.

Splits every time.
I bought test to use for some braces on a picnic table, but every single screw split the wood right down the middle. These are one of those buys that it would cost more in gas to take it back. Very disappointed in this wood.

Really awful
Not well stocked at this store. Nor is the stock well checked. I had to really dig to find any that weren't uselessly warped for one project.
Since my next project was "some" temporary fencing, I bought the ones I rejected the previous week (it was exactly the same stock as the prior week) so I could chop them in half and pound them into the ground. Which was about all they were good for.

Worst purchase experience ever at Home Depot
warped, split, twisted, and consequently, totally unusable.

Quality is usually good
I have been in the store several times to pick out some of these 2 x 2 strips (which are really 1.5" x 1.5"). They must be restocked several times a week, or even daily, because the stock seems to be different every time I look. Some days the quality is better than others, but usually I don't have to inspect more than 3 of them for each good one. Home Depot has both ordinary quality ($1.98 each today) and a significantly higher grade for about $5 each. So if you want them all good, go for the premium type.
Incidentally, decent softwood 2 x 2s are stronger than you might think, as long as you make sure they are in either pure compression or pure tension in your design. If you apply much of a bending moment to the strips, forget it: in that case, they will definitely bend, and might even break.

Lumber is not full length
Lumber at Home Depot is not a full 8 foot long. It is at least 1/8 to 1/4 short of 8'. I even checked the plywood and other sheeting and the same problem exists.

poor quality
I purchased two of these. One of them has multiple longitudinal cracks. I don't know I can use it for my project. There fore I have to buy another one.

Beware
Ordered 40 and had to return and replace 21 due to their being warped or twisted to the point that they were unusable. Understand that a few pieces of wood are expected to be less than ideal, but over half? And the fact that they were ordered online for pickup and people at the store CHOSE these pieces for a customer. This more than the defective wood is the reason for the 1-star review. This same order included defective 2x4s and 2x6s, but less than half the total order in those cases.
If you're in the market for lumber, either pay more and go to a lumberyard or actually go to Home Depot and pick out the lumber yourself. Don't allow them to do it for you and doing it yourself expect to go through a lot of lumber in order to find good wood.

Great product, but check for warping before you buy
I have used around 100 pieces of these furring strips, and I have to say, they're very, very handy. I've used them for balusters on my deck handrail (2 years, not a single warp or splitting), wall framing for my OSB-sheathed chicken coop, glue blocks in my planter boxes, and several other things. Just make sure you check the straightness of each piece; as these are thin pieces of wood, they can be warped, sometimes quite badly. Unless that doesn't matter (e.g. for short glue blocks), I always lay them on the hardware store's floor and just flop them over to check that each side lays flat. Other than that, or if you choose one with a bad knot, these things hold up great. It's easy enough to get the best pieces, and they usually have hundreds in stock.
