I purchased 70 bags of this topsoil for my backyard. Bags were full of mulch and rocks. Useless.

I purchased this product to fill low spots in my yard. Much to my dismay it is 95% mulch....hence the name on bag (TIMBERLINE) 3% 'soil' and 2% trash. Before purchasing this do yourself a favor and spend a little more money for something that resembles DIRT....this stuff does not!! See pics from my experience. The glass piece was found when I picked up this crap from my yard.....now we wait for the 'canned' response from Old Castle!!

I use this to make potting/seeding mixes and enjoy using it for the fact that it's cheap. HOWEVER, the quality is a major hit or miss. Sometimes you get a bag of black gold, other times you get bags of mulch, hardly usable for my intended use. Save yourselves the trouble and by small amounts at a time and/or press on the bags at the store to see whether the bag feels smooth or chunky. That will generally give you somewhat of an idea of what's inside. The attached pictures shows the content of my last purchase (2 bags). Mostly mulch, some rocks, a piece of wire, and some hard piece of plastic....

I have been using this top soil for a lot of years. When I was checking to see how many bags my local store had in stock, I read some of the reviews. Almost scared me off. But, I needed 90 bags right now so I made two trips and hauled it home. It is just exactly what I needed. I was leveling some areas in my yard and filling in where I removed a ground level deck. I am very pleased with the quality I received, the bags contained mostly soil. There were some small twigs, but no trash or big pieces. I think that some people expect to buy the lowest priced item in the store and receive the highest price product in the bag. I recommend trying this product. Manage your expectations and you will probably be happy.

How this is labeled as Top Soil is beyond me. It is a complete lie. Like others have posted, this is not soil. It is ground up wood. Like mulch except more finely ground. My bag had no soil whatsoever and has a chemical smell like pressure treated wood had been ground into the mix. I would say it could be a soil amendment but I don’t trust it. Shame on you Home Depot and Oldcastle. I will never again buy this product.

Don't buy this supposedly called "top soil." I had the unfortunate experience of buying 20 bags of this junk and it caused me more work than doing the actual job. The object was to lay it over newly spread grass seed. I spent more time picking out the junk in the top soil and raking it to get out the small junk (rocks, wood and other garbage) than doing the job. Of the 20 bags of "top soil" it took out more than 10, 5 gallon buckets of junk..... the pics tell the story. What is amazing that a national retailer, Home Depot, is selling this literal garbage. The store that I bought it from in Myrtle Beach had over 1400 bags of this junk. They should do their customers a very big favor and send it back to the supplier, pronto.

This product is literally TRASH - not top soil. Look at the attached picture. The bags are full of brick pieces, a major amount of wood, rocks, plastic sheeting (yes that's trash by any definition). The product contains very little usable top soil. After putting out 3 bags, I raked and picked up about 1.5 bags of debris. I am seriously irritated to have to haul this TRASH back to Home Depot. Worst product I have ever purchased.

Works great as the base in making my own raised bed mix.

Its great for subsoil build ups and for till conditioning, just be ready for large remenants of wood from the mulch. Its good for build up because this is a blend of dirt and mulch. The mulch adds stability which allows build up. Not great for topsoil dressing.

Product may be a bit misleading. This really is most appropriate to be used as fill "dirt", not planting or even mixing for planting soil IMO. If you're looking for soil to plant in, this isn't it. Knowing this, I use this purely for filling holes/leveling pine straw beds where I have some holes forming due to tree stump deterioration. Excellent for that purpose. If planting, I'd look elsewhere...just know you'll pay more.

If I wanted trash, I would've gone to the landfill. This stuff is absolute garbage and not top soil. It is full of sticks. Is there really a wide range of definitions for "top soil"? The Home Depot should immediately stop selling this rip off product. I wouldn't have paid 99 cents for this bag. It's infuriating to have people mislabel their product to sell it, only for me to get home and find that it's nothing like it was labeled and I can't use it to complete my job. They should pay me gas money for the wasted resources to bring it all back.

I got 30 bags for vegetable bed. realized it's full of plastic garbages....they are selling garbages not soil

Timberline topsoil from Oldcastle Lawn & Garden had pieces of glass and metal in it. I found out because I step on a piece of glass and cut myself. Buyer beware. Previous reviews have mentioned glass in topsoil also.

Very disappointed in this product. Purchased several bags as foundation for laying sod in bare spots. This "soil" turned out to be more like wood mulch-80 to 90% chunks of wood and no more than 20% soil. I laid new sod on top of this "soil" and watered for the first time. Much of the "soil" floated away since it was mostly wood. Next morning, there was no moisture left in the "soil" and soaked the sod again. More "soil" floated away and the "soil" dried out in a very short time. Looks like I'm going to have to water the sod three or four times a day to try to keep the roots moist enough so they can grow. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this "soil". Save your money. Not only have I lost money with buying this mislabeled product, but I am spending more money and time watering my sod trying to keep it alive. I purchased 4 bags of Timberline 1-cu ft Top Soil. It was full of large pieces of wood (up to 8 inches long), Wires, plastic bag pieces, rocks, pieces of metal & black hard plastic pieces. This is the worst top soil I've ever purchase & a complete waste of money. I can't believe they even sell this. I thought I was getting top soil, but I was getting a bag of garbage. Shame on you Home Depot for carrying this product. Total rip off. I attached a photo, this is just a small portion of the garbage from one bag of soil. I had a home depot bucket full of the garbage from 4 bags. Buyer beware.

Soil content was better than expected according to the reviews. The Top Soil bags were just at the right pounds to not break one's back when spreading. I spread a little of the Milorganite in the soil to give it a boost for growing my flowering plant kits.

I purchased ten bags of Timberline Top Soil (one cu. ft. each) from Home Depot to till in with the soil in the garden I am planting. I dumped all the bags at various locations in the garden and upon inspection was extremely disappointed with the contents: numerous twigs, roots, pieces of wood 1+" in diameter, and even some plastic and other trash. It appears as though these bags were filled with a black mulch product instead of soil because there was very little if anything that even resembled soil.

Did the job and not excessively wet

I love this soil. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is. I used it to plant some seeds in front yard. Plus some flowers that were in bad condition because of the old soil. It's been over 2 weeks and seeds have been blooming and flowers are doing great.

What I received was almost all sand. It contained very little organic material. It looked NOTHING like the photo above. By the way, I bought more than 1 (1cu ft) bag and they were enough.

Great for my potted plants.

I have built three above-greound planting frames this spring; two of them were 4' x 8' x 4", using two by fours as their basis. If the topsoil bags were one cubic foot each, no more than eleven bags should have been used to fill them. It actually took sixteen bags each to fill them; that's two-thirds of a cubic foot per bag, which is precise: (4'x8'x1/3') total volume divided by (2/3 cu ft/ bag) equals 16 bags. The third frame is 8' x 4' x 6", using 6" wide pt lumber. If the bags were one cubic foot each, it should have taken sixteen bags to fill the frame; it took twenty-four bags to fill it. If you're taking your vendor's word that the bags contain one cubic foot, you and your customers are being shorted. At about $1.50 / bag, the cost of filling the frames is not major. For a whole yard, you can draw your own conclusion. You need to perform the experiment, and verify the results I got, and take the appropriate action. Pros: Easy to Install

even the mulch i buy does not have pieces of brick and stones larger than 1” diameter, like i found in this top soil. This product really does look like a bag of mulch with pieces of rock and brick mixed in.

The bag was full of wood pieces...clay..and not what the rest of the product was....very little good soil....Waste of money...

The 3 bags I bought had very little mulch or filler in it (good) but when opened reeks of...tire rubber? What do they put in this stuff. Appeays to have a clay-like texture but smells of old rubber or perhaps oil products as they burn. I dumped the opened bag at the far point of my yard & returned other 2 bags. Sitting here on the deck I can still smell it.

Perfect soil for lawns and plants. The price was very reasonable and it was delivered.

Excellent for filling in holes dug by dogs & small children. Also for covering new grass seed.
