ECO Not SO Smart Heater -Needs Redesign!
Less than 1 year went thru 7 heater elements and 1control board. Heater element blew out top, water soaked everything including Control board 1st time, then 2nd a leak at the top of the elments, not the threaded area, but where the wires connect. slow leak that since there is no air circulation allowed saturation to build up until short circuit.. fuse for unit is .025 amp fast blow.. probably because unit can not handle any moisture.. After the 1st four 9000 watt units blew I hav replaced with 3800 watts. I am in Florida. Be sure to get warranties and have someone install that will guarantee the work.. I am in search for a pool heater to replace this one.. i will take my loss and move on..

I use this system here in FL, as our pool is in the sun all day long, hence when the sun is out, we don't need it! The location of the Pool heater is at the side of the house, so doesn't capture any direct sun; had it been located in the sun, then a more expensive heat-pump would have been beneficial, but not for our location, hence don't need to capture the sun's energy as the days we want to use the heater, its a cold day ! Install was easy, as long as you have 2 x 40A breakers and correct gauge wiring. We changed the cable clamp and made a custom conduit 'Y' fitting so all cables and conduit are directly connected vs just pinching the cables. Pluming straight forward. Operation easy press of the dial. Only negative is the LED display is extremely hard to see in the sun, even shading with your hand, its difficult to see what's displayed. It took less than 24 hrs to heat our 10000 gallon pool +15F Hoping for longevity - we will see.

Replacing a pool heater is never trivial, but this unit's install was far easier than any we've done before. We replaced a broken propane pool heater with this sleek tankless 61,000 BTU EcoSmart pool heater. Natural Gas is not available in our rural location so we used propane previously to heat our pool and its cost is quite high. As a result, the cost of using this much power was not nearly as onerous as it might seem. With the heater installed with our in-ground pool running a little over 70 GPM, we get anywhere between 2 and 5 degrees differential between the incoming and outgoing water temperatures. This is exactly what we hoped for, as this is not a spa, but rather a large in-ground pool, we wanted simply to raise the temp to comfortable levels, as opposed to creating a hot tub. Installation is straight-forward. We plumbed in the recommended bypass and shut-off valves (see pictures) using 2" PVC since the inlet and outlet are 2" fittings. Because this unit is not designed to be exposed to freezing temperatures, we plumbed in unions that allow it to be taken in for the winter. We also built a housing around it to protect it from the elements in the summer. Wiring is easy, but demands 80A of 220V power. We ran a pair of 40 Amp lines using 8-2 w/Ground Romex from 40A breakers in the main panel to two remote disconnect switches at the heater. The electric and plumbing installation took about 8 hours total time, so it's not quick, but not hard either. The only issue we had with the install was mounting the heater to the metal base that comes with it. The heater leg flanges did not line up with the threaded holes in the base, requiring us to manually bend the heater flange legs to align properly. Minor issue, and the paint did not chip while bending the metal, but from a quality perspective, not up to a 5 recommendation. The unit does not come with a remote, but one is available for about $50. We did not opt to install that as we felt it would probably be more useful for a tankless heater serving a shower or bath than a swimming pool that rarely needs temp adjustments and requires considerable time to do so. This unit really extends the swimming season for us, so we're really delighted with it. Definitely recommended for those, like us, who don't have access to low cost gas heating alternatives.

I wasn't sure about a pool heater at the beginning. Now I am glad that I got one. Living in the east coast means that you only get to enjoy your outdoor pool for about two months every year, which is a huge shame. It is also such a waste of money that the pool is just collecting dust and takes up a big piece of your back yard. So I gave this heater a try. Installation was easy. I have been running it for about a month now. So far everything is good. It is also more energy sufficient than the ones with tanks.

It didn't come with any kind of warranty paperwork or instructions. Power seemed confusing at first, it's 75amps (so 2x 240volt lines). That being said, the install was easy (I should mention I am a plumber). I hooked up the pump (Intex .22hp) and the unit came right on. Set the temp and go. Wanted 86 degrees in my 12x24ft above ground pool, Colorado weather cools down in the fall bringing the pool temp over night to about 75 degrees. If I start heating in the morning, I get my 86 by afternoon. I installed it in a 'hut' outside and made both plugs and 2" PVC lines with disconnect options.

This is the first time having a pool heater for me. We had to close the pool as soon as the water temperature got too cold to enjoy. It also did not get warm enough until July. Now we will be able to use and enjoy the pool for a much longer season. Installation looks very easy and not complicated at all. The unit gets mounted on the wall. It must be inside and not allowed to freeze in the winter. It has to be mounted after the filter. Wouldn't want the bugs and leaves clogging up this heater. There are two water connections on the side of the unit. One for the cold water coming in and the the other for heated water returning to the pool. There is also the electrical connection that does not have a plug and has to be installed by an electrician. It needs two forty amp breakers. It also has to have a bypass, drain valve and shut off ball valve installed. This EcoSmart is more than a regular pool heater. It is an on demand tankless model. It is so much more energy efficient than keeping a large tank hot all the time. It has worked well in homes already. EcoSmart also makes a variety of home tankless water heaters. This model uses eighteen KW and heats up to 2 3/4 gal per min. It is for a pool up to about 11,000 gallons. It has a digital thermostat in that sets temperature in one degree increments. The minimum setting is eighty degrees with a maximum safety of 104. Since my pool is currently in the mid eighties, it is comfortable for now. In a few weeks, it will be too cold to swim without this new heater. It will be great!!

    EcoSmart 27 - You'll waste a lot of money
Replacement parts will eat you up, and believe me, you'll be replacing parts. The company provides terrible support. They'll read the printed manual to you. You'll have wished you paid a little extra for a quality brand.

      dont last
This is the 2nd one I bought and both quit right after the warranty was up. Too much money for it to only last two years. Didn’t even use it that much

This purchase was a disaster that was waiting to happen. Besides the cost of the product I found that I had to do a major electrical rework of my panel in the basement because the unit operates on 440 watt double pole double throw fuses. It operates on shear electricity. The cost necessary to upgrade my electrical service alone was $2,000. I did not have enough power coming into the house to satisfy the needs of the unit . You need to check this out before you purchase to determine if your electrical panel can handle the power requirement of the unit. After reviewing the unit it seemed that it used raw electrical energy to heat the wire. The heater only comes on when water is going through it You cannot just walk over and flip the switch to turn the heat around The pump must be running in order for the heater to operate That's what keeps the water flowing and warm water flowing through the unit

          Eco Smart Pool 18
Bought this device in April online, hired an electrician to run wire and install 2-double 40 amp breakers, ordered a housing for it due to reviews that said to not put in weather. Worked amazingly for 2 weeks. Contacted Tech Support, said it was probably a stopped up flow switch. Looked device up online, and diagrams did not show location of flow sensor on this model, tech support said it was in the input. Took device apart after having electrician to disconnect wiring, located it in the outlet with a spring clip holding it. Removed spring clip and could not remove sensor. Cleaned it inside the unit with all suggestions from Eco using vinegar and flushing with water. Hooked all back up, flow still shows F 00. Knowing the pool pump is pumping excellent pressure through unit. It worked before. So far Ive spent $900 on heater, another $750 on electrician and I still have a heater that doesnt work. I have a case number from tech support, went online to website with the case number, still no contact back to me. This is not a plug and play device, but doing as adviced has not worked. I am hoping someone with Home Depot reads my review. This is used on a physical therapy lap pool thats not getting used.

No Longevity, great attempt from customer service
We bought this heater because it was cheaper to run electric than gas in our area, had it professionally installed and it ran great the first year but the last 2 years despite new parts sent by their customer service department(they were great at attempting to help) the heater will not stay running will work when it wants to but never for very long so this year rather than try to play that game anymore will be biting the bullet and chalk it up as a loss and buy something new most likely gas even though it will cost more in the long run. Great attempts by customer service but I have to give a negative review on the product itself as it was a giant waste of money and a headache that i should not have to deal with.

                    Ecosmart 27 junk
I'm a licensed plumber of 22 yrs and I installed this unit on my pool and have an electrician out to run all the wiring and new sub panel well it worked great for a week and a half and had to replace all 3 elements then worked great again for a week and a half and just replaced all 3 elements again and now I'm getting an error some of e5 telling me my pressure switch is either too much pressure or not enough pressure or my electric is low it was working fine while it was blowing out 2 other elements and now it show low power or too much pressure weird all I did was change elements cause they were bad so I've had the unit for a month installed and I have 6 new elements into it and how much down time and how many phone calls to tech support that only wants to give 1 element at a time and I spend almost 300.00 in extra elements that I have now gone through so not only do you have to pay to install the unit but you better have an agreement with the manufacturer to have someone come out and change all the elements 2 times a month this is the biggest pie of junk i have ever had and I deal with tankless water heaters every day and now I have to call tech support again cause the unit won't reset and I have to get a new pressure switch what a joke and I was told you can install this unit outside and nope you cannot my pool and pool equipment are outside so the heater goes inside now not happening

                      Good for a week
Box arrived with no instructions. Had to hunt down an online PDF. One of the most annoying issues was the required breakers differed from the box vs instructions vs website. Installed just fine. Worked for about 5 days great and then stopped. Tech support said it was a bad element and they would send parts. Umm after spending close to 900 dollars I’m not peace mealing parts with the hopes it works. Will research and reliable alternative.

I have an 18000 gallon indoor pool and it raised the water temp 6 degrees in 6 hours. My pump is on a time clock and runs 6 hours a day. I am pleasantly surprised that this unit draws very little electricity to maintain 86 degree water temp. Pool is covered. I am very pleased. I used 8 gauge wire and 3 50 amp double breakers on a 200 amp dedicated service.

Unfortunately it seems that 18kW is insufficient to heat my 7000 gallon pool… during night when outside temperature is in the 60s, the heater can’t keep up and the pool temperature drops. During the day the temperature slowly rises but never gets to my target temperature.

My name is Juan and I am the Customer Service & Technical Support Supervisor. I am following up on an review posted 4/23/2019 on Homedepot.com regarding the ECO Pool 18 you have purchased and installed. The ECO Pool 18KW can handle up to an 11,000 gallon pool. Depending on the temperature rise that you are looking for, it will take a certain amount of time to heat up the pool. How many circuit breakers do you have going to this unit and what size breakers? What is the temperature that you are looking to heat the water to? If any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact our technical support. Thank you.
