PPG prolix water based stain was used on cedar shutters I build for my daughters house. I started applying with a brush but quickly switched to running in with a rag to get the penetration and even tone I wanted. I know oil based would have been easier to apply but In Illinois they won’t allow it to be shipped so I improvised. Time will tell if it will hold up but it is vertical on the structure.

My experience with Sikkens products goes back over 2 decades. In the late 90's I bought my mother a porch swing made out of sinker cypress from Acadian Hardwood in Pontchatoula, LA. When I asked the salesman what finish to put on it, he recommended something called Cetol by Sikkens. It was crazy expensive, but the salesman said it would last forever. So I bought a quart, applied it to the swing and presented it to my mom that Christmas. Several years later, I was in the backyard where the swing was hung. Other than the spots caused by the oven cleaner spray she was using to kill wasps (don't ask), it looked like new. Fast forward a number of years, and it's time to pressure wash and coat the deck on the house my wife and I had bought a couple of years later in Northern VA. In walking around HD, we noticed five gallon cans of this product, which was recommended for deck treatments. We bought a can, had it colored butternut. Applying it was everything I expected. It went on well, covered well, generally an excellent product. The coating proved very durable, and was easy to clean looking like new with a quick brush job with some deck cleaner. A couple of years ago (3) a tree fell in the backyard claiming part of the deck. We got everything cleaned up, replaced all the damaged sections, and decided to sand the deck surface as the boards had cupped and were holding water. I bought another 5 gallon can of this product from HD, only this time it was not available in the store, it had to be ordered online. My wife and I found that curious. The can arrived and using a paint sprayer, I applied all five gallons to the newly sanded deck. Honestly, it didn't seem that it covered very well, but as I was spraying it versus rolling like last time I had no frame of reference. This summer I decided it was time too clean the deck. A quick scrub of the deck to remove the mildew/debris was virtually useless. Firing up the pressure washer, using the lowest setting, I was unable to get the mildew off, but a lot of the coating came free of the wood, particularly the newer wood used to replace the damaged sections. I had a 1 gallon can from 3 years ago, so I ordered another 1 gallon can to make certain I had enough to cover everything that wouldn't come clean. The first thing I noticed about the new can is it now is by PPG and Sikkens is nowhere to be found. H'mmm. Mixing the two cans together I rolled the upward facing surfaces. Luckily, it's the same color and consistency. This coating should not have been anywhere easily stained as it was, and certainly should have adhered to the extensively treated surface I put it on. So if you are looking for Sikkens quality coatings, this isn't it. Unfortunate.

The paint was easy to use, covered well and had a translucent effect that allowed the wood grain to appear.

Easy to apply & overlap areas blended nicely. We sanded our 25 + year deck & translucent stain lets grain show while blending areas of imperfection. We both are pleased with results!

This is not what I ordered. It was more like a stain when I specifically wanted a sealer. Very disappointed.
