Holy Cow!
Bought this today because I was tired of pulling my shoulder out every time I wanted to use my power head with an accessory(have both the 25cc head and an electric one) It cost a lot! but it performs every bit as good as either of the other 2 heads. It rand through some brush with the brush cutter in an instant. Then on to a palmetto bush, those things will test anything. Went right through them on high, no sweat. So they finally have a battery operated device that works!

As a big fan of RYOBI tool, they have done it again! This string trimmer has the power of my old gas trimmer without the mess. This is my first entry into the Ryobi 40-volt ecosystem and I am truly impressed. It is quiet and powerful; easy to handle, although it took me a bit to get used to how much better it cuts than my old 18 volt trimmer. It made short work of my edging and weed trimming. The trimmer with the battery installed is relatively heavy, but has such a great weight distribution and balance that one can barely tell. The fact that it has three options: bump feed, fixed line, or bladed head (all included!) makes this one versatile beast of a tool (the bladed head will come in handy when I start to trim brush next week). Putting line back on the bump head is a snap too with the speed winder; finally, I have a trimmer that addresses the fact I will need to put more line on at some point and that I don’t want to spend a lot of time doing it. Simply put a great trimmer! Now, for the BONUS: it is attachment capable! I can get a tiller, pole saw, etc and simply swap the trimmer portion for the attachment. I have not yet bought any, but I can hear the pole saw calling my name… Only drawback is that I wish it came with a small attachment bag, somewhere where I could conveniently store the speed winder and the fixed line/bladed head parts, as well as the charger, maybe attach it to the attachment hanger. Finally, I am loving this 40 volt system; coming with the battery and charger is great, and the charger can also be used to provide USB power, either plugged into AC or via battery. Simply a great idea.

Several years ago I moved to using a multi-tool type of weed wacker with edger and blower and a pruning saw. I thought that was the height of convenience for yard tools. I had tried a battery-powered weed wacker, but it only got me through half of my yard and the power was poor. That was ten years ago. Two years ago I tried out a 40v lawnmower and really love it. No gas or oil and very little noise. So I was ready to try a battery weed wacker in the 40v system. Wow! What a difference. The 40v lithium system is amazing. The torque gets through the tough weeds and the battery will make it through two trimmings easily. The motor has two settings (high/low) for when the going gets extra tough, but I don't even need it for weeds. The head accepts all of my other accessories, and the high setting runs the leaf blower at least as high as the gas engine. So now I'm ready to get rid of the gas motor, which means no more pre-mix! No more adjusting the carb every month. No priming with fifteen pumps of the bulb or dripping gas all over. I can probably get rid of the premix gas can, now! And no more wearing those sweaty mickey mouse ears. Smooth, quiet power. And since I can share the battery with the mower, I always have one battery on the charger. And the string trimmer is no slouch either. It feeds line perfectly on one bounce and even comes with a set of plastic blades for heavy grass, etc. (see picture)

The Ryobi 40V Li Cordless String Trimmer Model #40250 is bigger than me - but I can handle it! I do all my landscape trimming and mowing on a small mountain acreage and battle all sorts of weeds, vines, brush and general trimming around fences, gardens and landscape. I have a shed full of landscape tools and they all seem to be good at one thing. I was searching for a system that could handle several of the challenges on my homestead and after reading reviews and specs I chose the Ryobi 40V Li Cordless String Trimmer for several reasons - it's as powerful as my gas trimmer and much quieter, I can swap dimpled string and blades easily AND attach a cultivator, edge trimmer, small snowblower to clear sidewalk/deck and pruner. there's more you can buy but these will replace FIVE pieces of equipment! First opening the box I was a little skeptical - fully assembled it's longer than I am tall and there's a fair amount of weight along that near 7ft pole I was holding there in my living room. But once a few adjustments were made to the hand handle position, I found out in the yard the tool to be balanced and easy for me to maneuver around. I like the variable speed trigger and bump feed that didn't seem to waste the string. Working some with the tool and adjusting the carry handle a few more times I now have a very comfortable configuration that I can easily handle at 5ft 2in. and holding the tool close resting on my hip the weight of the tool was easily distributed and seemed lighter. The battery came to full charge in just a couple of hours on the regular charger included. The all in one system is a new paradigm for me and it will take me a little while to master all the features this string trimmer offers but I can tell already with the power and ease of use I'll be adding more attachments by next season and finally clear out my shed. I find the Ryobi 40V Li Cordless String Trimmer to be powerful, easy to use, seems durable enough with the added bonus of system capable attachments. And, with the brushless motor I would expect years of service from it. So if I can easily handle this well-made tool, anyone can. It has my recommendation. The tool was so long assembled with the string trimmer attachment I had to use the panoramic feature on my camera - it's not bowed just my inability to stead the sweeping shot.

40 volts makes a big difference! Compared to my 18V model, this is much more capable. Pro: Good weight, good balance, reasonable power. 4AH battery a plus. Con: The only shortcoming I found in this kit was that the included battery charger cannot be wall mounted. General: We tested this on our slightly overgrown woodland path, about 200 yards long. Used the trimmer on low speed for about 30 minutes with blade attachment. Cutting low brush - oak, maple, sassafrass, blueberry. Approx 3/8 inch max stems. After this, battery at 50%.

I already have a Ryobi 18 volt trimmer for light use but I felt that I could use this one to replace my finicky gas trimmer. I am delighted about how well this trimmer works. It's lighter and as powerful as my gas unit. Wasn't sure how long the battery would last but it did my entire yard which is a few acres. The string feeder worked properly as some others I have used don't. I also like the changeable head to use fixed string or blades. And the attachment capable feature allows the head to be turned 90 degrees to make it an edger. Even though there are multiple other attachments I probably won't be getting many as I don't have that much need for them. But you never know. The only thing I have (and I'm nitpicking) against it is the charger. I'm used to a charger base that you put the battery into. This one is more of use the battery for the base and let the charger float. But it does have a USB charging port which my other base chargers don't so there's that. Also I would have liked to seen a shoulder strap come with it. I rigged up my own but it would have been nice. Very happy with this trimmer.

I wanted the new 40-volt Ryobi string trimmer because I've had good luck with the 18-volt Ryobi units - but my new leaf blower uses the larger 40 volt cells and it's handy to be able to use the same batteries. This new 40 volt isn't, however, anything like the 18-volt trimmers, other than having the same Ryobi name. Comparatively, this new one is a beast. It's longer, heavier, obviously geared for heavier workloads and comes with not only an "easy load" reel but an additional reel that holds hard blades. The brushless 2-speed motor offers more power and the trigger switch is variable speed. (See the photo below of the old vs. new Ryobi trimmers). I'm still getting used to the additional length/weight of the new trimmer. I only have a small suburban lot but being semi-retired I sometimes do the lawns of neighbors if I know they're on vacation or working late, etc. This new trimmer is well equal to the task - it's reminiscent of a gas-powered trimmer, but without the noise and fumes. I read reviews of previous models where some folks were having trouble with the heat buildup where your arm rests on the trimmer. I trimmed three lots today with temperatures in the 80's and the Ryobi didn't get warm at all. Whatever issues the older units may have had seem to be addressed with this new model. YMMV, but I didn't have any issues at all with heat. What I did have trouble with was the "bump" feed - I don't know if I'm hitting it too lightly or too hard, but it takes several "bumps" before the line feeds for me. I flipped the unit upside down and manually pressed the bump mechanism and then pulled on the ends of the line and they fed right out, so there’s no problem with the way the line is loaded. I also am having trouble with the shield - I really think the Ryobi engineers should consider adding a couple of inches of coverage. Several times today I had debris miss the shield and hit me. A little bit bigger shield would, I think, offer more protection without negatively impacting the usefulness of the trimmer. I checked the angle that I was working at, the length of the handle, and everything seemed fine; I'm getting hit with debris that the older 18 volt unit didn't stir up. Of course, the new 40 volt has a lot more power (even when set on "low") - but that's all the more reason for an effective shield. It was aggravating enough for me to reduce the rating by a star (YMMV). It may be my technique - but I don't think so. I'd still recommend the trimmer (it has plenty of power and gets the job done) but I'd also recommend good goggles or a face shield. Battery life was fine - I did the three yards (the lots are 1/3 acre suburban lots but have a fair amount of linear trimming required due to patios, garden bricks, etc.). After all the trimming the battery still had enough juice left to power my leaf blower to clean up the walks and drives. Almost all the trimming was done with the speed set to "low" and then the blower was run w/o the power boost button being activated. I’d like to see an option for adding a shoulder strap – even though the machine has nice balance, after carrying the thing around for awhile it would be nice to have a strap to take up some of the weight. The kit includes the trimmer, reel, line, extra reel for hard blades, a speed winder, a 4.0 a/h battery, and a charger. There's a 5-year warranty on the trimmer and Home Depot offers their 90-day return policy. HTH Regards, Jim

Wow, I was really quite surprise on the power that this grass trimmer has for a cordless, battery powered unit. I compared it with my existing gas trimmer and could see that battery technology has improved to the point of being comparable in power. I could feel the power and it is truly strong and impressive when I used it to trim the grass around my flower beds. Here is my take on this trimmer: 1) The battery is lithium ion and it charges fully in good time about 1.5-2 hrs. You can use it for your typical trimming usage on the one battery with power to spare. 2) It is a bit heavier than gas trimmer, because this has a steel shaft rather than aluminum, and the head of the trimmer is bigger. I think if you adjust the D handle you can sort of balance it between the trimmer head at one end and the battery pack at the other end. 3) I like the two speeds Low and High, when using to trim normally I found that low was more than adequate. 4) The shaft is also adjustable for both normal grass trimming and if you want to try to edge, you can rotate the bottom shaft 90 degrees. 5) The shaft is two piece, because if you want you can buy separately other attachments to connect to it, such as pole saw, leaf blower, tiller, etc. 6) It comes with 3 different head grass trimmer styles that you can switch between, typical line spool fixed line, and fixed blade. 7) There is two things you need to keep an eye: a) The spring inside the trimmer head when you say for example replacing the line in the spool, that spring can fall away if you are not careful. See pic of it in my hand. 9) The trimmer head has this twist lock method, you match up the white triangle markings and twist toward the picture of the lock. Well...it takes a bit of feel to get it to twist lock. I had to try several times which can be frustrating too 10) This is a brush-less unit, and for all motors that are brush-less, they have more power and can be smaller in size. To which if you hold this trimmer unit and look at where the battery slides in, that is where the motor is and it looks like the batter is bigger than the motor itself. 11) I like how the Big D handle along the shaft is angled so that it fits more comfortably with your hand/arm grasping it for control. Nice feature. 12) Noise wise it is much much lower than my gas and you don't really need to use ear plugs when using which is a big plus. I am quite impress with the power of this trimmer, it is comparable to my gas trimmer, and you don't have to bother with gas/oil mixture either. The battery technology and brushless motor of this trimmer is not like the weak power early days of battery powered units of your father. This is an excellent battery powered trimmer that for folks not wanting to use gas, you will be extremely happy with this. It has made a believer out of me about battery powered equipment like this.

The cordless string trimmer seems to be an overall good unit. As my first cordless yard tool, the expandable nature of the “attachment capable” design is appealing with the snow thrower a likely addition given the number of stairs and narrow walkways on my property that make a full-size snow thrower impractical. The power head with the 40v 2Ah battery has enough life to string trim more than 500 lineal ft of sidewalk edges and the bump advance line feed works well. Balance on the unit is decent with the string trimmer and the weight of the unit is imperceptibly less than my gas trimmer with very comparable performance with a much lower noise level. The nearly infinitely adjustable handle provides a good grip whether operating the trimmer horizontally for trimming or vertically for edging. A small downside is the guard seems to provide slightly compromised protection from projectiles to provide good visibility of the work area - personal safety equipment is a MUST!

Wow...this Ryobi 40 watt grass trimmer has the power to complete the trimming job with power to spare. I trimmed my whole yard in 30 minutes and still had battery power to spare. You can tell that a lot of engineering went into this trimmer due to the fact of all of the features offered by the Ryobi trimmer. Just one of these new features is the 3-in-1 cutting head which cuts a 13" to 15" cutting path. Can be used as a typical bump feed head, a bladed head using serrated blades and the fixed line head which allows for no winding of cutting line or bumping of the head. Comes with the 40 volt lithium battery and charger. Has a tough 15" brushless motor and is a straight shaft trimmer which allows for maximum power and run time before the battery runs down. The brushless motor is variable speed controlled by a variable speed trigger. It is part of the Ryobi 40 volt easy-use "EXPAND-IT SYSTEM" which makes it versatile with other Ryobi attachments as follows: a cultivator, a cement sweeper, a snow blower, an edger, an extended reach chainsaw and a leaf/grass blower. Supplied with extra Ryobi .080 twisted cutting line which has 4 raised cutting surfaces for longer lasting cutting time.Carries a 5 year limited tool warranty and a 90 day no-risk satisfaction guarantee.

Very good addition to my outdoor tools, The handle will operate several different Ryobi 40 volt tools. and the battery will run all 40 volt equipment. Very easy to assemble and take apart. Very easy to use but the battery is heavy and wears you down after a long use. It comes with pre-cut cords and the plastic knives for more rugged weed whacking. I break it down for storage as it is quite long.

Batteries don't last and home Depot customer service person had no common sense
I went to the home Depot on dezavala road near I10 with a bad battery from one of my 18v tools. The lady said she could not replace just the battery. I had to bring the item. Anyway, this is not the first battery to go bad for me. Another home Depot exchanged the other one.

Owned the string trimmer with the brushes for a little over 3 years which died on me after some heavy usage. I prefer the trimmer with the brushes. The brushless model seems to be louder, does not seem to have as much power and I do not see a need for a two position switch.

        Easy! Works great.
Way easier and more reliable than my old gas weed eater and all my old attachments fit this new one. I used it recently with a pole saw attachment to saw a bunch of plum tree branches that broke in a storm. The battery was going strong after more than 30 minutes of cutting.

Bad batteries that don’t hold charge!
Ryobi has terrible customer service. They only offer a 3 year limited warranty on their batteries because they know they have a limited lifespan and are poor, subpar quality. I would never buy another Ryobi product again. Their customer service said they require a receipt & it has to be within 3 years of purchasing the item. These batteries should last well over 10 years. AVOID CHEAP RYOBI PRODUCTS. They just end up in a landfill.

Sorry, Ryobi, I like most of your tools but this one didn't make it. First, the tube at the attachment connection was badly out of round, and the two sections could not be made to go together. Second, when I turned on the motor I got a rough vibration and a loud growling noise. Scairy! I sent it back. Quickly.

Works well, first battery string trimmer
Had it for a year now, used it a lot. Powerful: trims, cuts saplings and neighbor's bushes that grow over my fence. I'm in FL w/about a 1/4 acre. Good battery: I can trim everywhere I need around my yard w/a full charge. If I also edge my pool deck, driveway, walkways, and the front yard along the road, I have to recharge; however, that's a lot of edging due to how my property is laid out. String feeds well, but you can't load too much in it or else it jams. After a year I like it.

I put this together and I used another battery that wasn’t even fully charged because I wanted to see if battery from old one worked. I set the switch on low and barely pulling the trigger was like Woah! This spins so fast that I don’t even know if I’ll ever use it on high. I only used it for Andre minutes because I just wanted to try it out but just those few minutes impressed me enough to be confident it will do my entire yard quickly and efficiently. My test was with the string. I haven’t used the other head yet.
