I usually don't give an excellent rating but the Ryobi 18 volt one deserves the 5 star. What I like is the sander, which equals in results of my corded much more expense random orbit sanders, frees me from the wall plug.

On/off button failed
I’ve owned this sander for less than a year. It was great. Speed and power was good. Seemed to get the job done. Hook it up to a shop vac and it is virtually dustless. Though I didn’t like the fact it seemed to give me hand cramps that others didn’t give me, I liked it. The like lasted until recently when the button failed. I’m not sure if they use a cheap plastic switch in it but if it’s not pressed right, it will turn off in the middle of sanding. It no longer has the slight resistance when pressed. It freely slides in. Luckily, Ryobi has a great warranty.

Starts iff great, then short lived
I purchased this as i liked the convenience of cordless. I used it mainly on 3 projects. A piano restore, a wine barrel and a small bathroom prior to painting. It stopped working then, so i opened it thinking I had clogged something. Discovered that the motor which has brass cog is sat upon by a plastic cog which then belt loops to another. When the motor gets warm it heats up th plastic which then melts. No parts available to replace it so now its all trash. Wont buy another

Full disclosure, I'm somewhat of a tool addict. I settled on Ryobi years ago because the value of what you get for what you pay is fairly high. Most tool guys will settle on a "Brand" of power tool and stick to it to avoid building a collection of chargers and batteries that don't interoperate. My brand is Ryobi for the 18/20V stuff and Milwaukee for the smaller 12V tools. So naturally when I needed a RO Sander for a toolbox restoration, I had two choices. I could get a more expensive Milwaukee 12V model or this product. I chose this product because I have more Ryobi Batteries. It performed admirably, and everything fit together as expected out of the box. I put a lot of hours on this sander in a very short amount of time, doing rough paint removal work from a well aged toolbox and it did everything I asked of it without issue. If I had to pin any complaints on it, after many hours of holding the darn thing I eventually couldn't find a comfortable place to grip it, but this is probably a commentary I could make of any Palm RO Sander, not specifically this model. For 40 bucks, it worked like a charm.

        Very Handy
I’m doing a major rehab of a table/chair, I’ve had to use just about every sander I have, and I bought this one to help hit areas others could not. I have done both small jobs and large jobs with equal good results. I would suggest having at least a couple batteries.

Sanding is never the fun part of any project for me, so I have a few different sanders in my shop. The project I am doing right now so far has been all sanding, I am attempting to repair/restore an old chair/table. While my Ryobi cordless Orbital sander does the bulk of the work, there are places it just can’t reach. I owned a corded finish sander before, but love my Ryobi cordless tools, so decided to go this way. It performed it’s task very well, in fact just as nice as the corded one I have, the only problem is I am doing hours of sanding on this project and of course the sanders seem to go through batteries pretty fast. Thank goodness I own a lot of batteries and chargers. I would also suggest you buy some extra pieces of sand paper when you buy this, the paper it comes with did not hold up very well.

        Good Corner Sander
This is a nice sander to compliment the random orbit sander. Great for getting inti those corners that the orbit sander can’t reach. Does a great job sanding and super easy to use. The handle grip is comfort to use for extended sanding. Only negative is it does not have dust collection.

        I really love it
This is one of my best Sanders, love the fact that it’s not too hard to my projects I work with pine a lot so I need to be extra careful, I have use a 4wts battery and it last me hours, the way it fits in my hand it’s perfect. One of the best parts of this sander is how easy to change sand paper.

        Handy Sander to Have
This is a very nice sander to have in your workshop. If you are in the ryobi platform this is the orbit sander to go with. Does a great job and holds up well. Not sure it could be used everyday in a professional setting but at the price point its great for the DIYer. I like it so much i have 2 that i use on a regular basis.

So far it has worked well. I use the batteries from my previously purchased Ryobi cordless tools. The battery does not last as long as I like, but I figured that going into it. It is doing the job that I paid for it to do. Easy enough to use an 8 year old child do it.

Helpful and time-saving for sure, but chews through batteries like nobody's business. I have 3 batteries, and maybe got about 30-40 minutes of sanding time before having to wait 4 hours while they charge. Annoying. Also, it's rough to get into corners. Have to hand- sand any details and corners.

This sander does not come with battery or charger. And it’s slows do your project if you thought it did and you didn’t have ONE+ . The batteries and chargers cost 99.00 and up so think about a corded sander if you don’t want be stuck with this fancy, useful, sander for the great price of “34.99” but in actuality it 149.00 for it to work.

I have had two of these. The first died after 1 month on the second use. it started to lose power and then smoke started to pour from it and it froze in place. I try to contact Ryobi about this as I needed to get this fixed so I could finish my project before the deadline. I got the standard answer and went to home depot as instructed. I was told I had to pay a $78 deposit for them to look at it and determine if it was covered under waranty. After this I started to say that it was unacceptable and a manager agreed and gave me a new one with no documentation. On to the new one now. I finished the project I was on and recently started a new one. Again the sander started to lose power and smells of burning. I again contact Ryobi for an explanation as to why this is an issue and get the same standard response as before. I am not going to deal with this anymore. Why do I need to pay someone to tell me the product has failed for the second time in less that a year after two small projects each. If Ryobi wants to talk to me they can but I will not be purchasing another Ryobi product with this customer service.

I purchased this item because my other sander broke, instead of purchasing the same one again I went with the Ryobi brand since I have almost all their tools. Light weight, love that it is cordless.
