Home Depot promotes Stonemark Mercury Quartzite for kitchen applications and says the material comes pre-sealed, resistant to staining and easy to clean with just soap and water. The color and the patterns in the Stonemark Mercury Quartzite stone are attractive, however, the kitchen countertop Home Depot installed in our home is not suitable for use in the kitchen, as it readily absorbs water and other fluids, such as oil that are routinely used in a kitchen setting. The water stains may dissipate over time. An oil stain appeared after placing a can of cooking spray on the counter at ambient temperature. This oil stain could not be removed with soap and water. Based on advice from experts in the field, we suspect Home Depot’s fabricator did not properly seal the stone. In addition to the staining issues there are multiple cosmetic defects on the countertop surface and edge contours that make it appearance inconsistent with the store display sample.
