There is one simple thing they don't tell you about this before you purchase it. They are a sealed 10 year battery, that gets activated once you snap it into the mount. However, if you remove it from the mount, it is deactivated, and can not be reactivated. Basically, its garbage if you take it down for any reason. I bought a new house with no smoke detectors, so I got this 3 pack to get some up quickly. I was planning on remodeling the kitchen early spring, summer, and will have to take the one down I installed in the kitchen. So basically, I paid $20 for a smoke detector to have for 5-6 months. Its a terrible design. Basically, unless you plan on putting this up, and not moving it for any reason for 10 years, it will work for you. If you plan to paint/remodel, then stay away from're wasting your money.

Inexpensive, easy to install, and meet California State Fire Marshal requirements for government required smoke detection in California homes. However, the included installation instructions for the units were not conspicuous, somewhat unclear, and may be confusing to the average installer, or at least require reading several times over to gain a clear understanding.

Pros: If your tired of hearing the alarms beep, the lithium battery is a good choice. Install is easy and straightforward. It has information concerning areas NOT to install it in, which can be useful if you have selected the wrong spot. Technically, I installed one too close to an air return, according to the instructions. The base has alignment marks which help ensure directional placement and the unit has some swivel after installation which allows you to fine-tune alignment, for aesthetics. Cons: Once installed, that's it. You cannot remove it and re-install in a different location. So, If you need to move it for any reason, the unit is a loss and has to be replaced - so much for the extra battery life. Conclusion: It's a little more costly, but if you have to live in or service the property, the cost and lack of re-installation is definitely worth not having to constantly carry a Costco sized pack of 9-volts to keep them quiet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Random Hush Beep I purchase 5 of these units at first. 3 were defective and would random beep in the middle of the night. It is like the Hush Button is pushed or fails. I noticed the date codes for the defective units were Sep and Oct 2015. The date code Dec 23 , 2015 seemed to work until last night. These units are 4 weeks old and I was woken up twice last night with the random Hush Beep. Returned to Home Depot today. This seems to be a problem with the 10 year lithium battery units be they First Alert or Kidde.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very good easy to install I have a apartment building and these are a life saver. They are easy to install and give you a sense of confidence when you activate them. It is a real comfort to know that they will work up to ten years. I no longer have to worry about tenants taking the batteries out and not replacing them. I no longer have to go into all the units and make sure that the smoke detectors are working. My tenants like them for the batteries don't go dead and wake them up in the middle of the night with that annoying beep beep beep. I will be buying more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Kidde Brand is CodeOne.....does NOT work. I picked this alarm because I was having trouble with 5-brand new Kidde wired alarms that I purchased 5 months ago. They randomly chirped 1-2x/wk. No reasons for any of the chirping. Driving us and the dogs crazy! So, come to find out Kidde also makes CodeOne. Seriously, we just cannot get away from this company. We installed the 3 units which are not interconnected or wired. We followed all directions completely. Installed on Sunday. Solitary chirp on Thursday evening. ALL 3-alarms are showing that they are functioning properly. No fires, no smoke, no one is cooking, and no dusting. And, of course, Kidde customer service is only open M-F from 8-5pm. I can understand why houses burn down and owners are not alerted because they don't have a smoke alarm. I am ready to pull them all down and never put another one up ever again. With all the breakthroughs in technology over the past 50-100 years, can they just make a smoke alarm that actually works!
