Answer:
The red wire is used when several units are interconnected (if one detects smoke or CO, all units sound alarm). The cap is to keep the wire from touching anything and causing a false alarm if installed as a single unit.

Answer:
Yes, I have replaced the batteries and it won't stop with the chirp/voice warning that batteries are low. I replaced to a different brand of battery - still won't stop. I just disconnected it (hard wired too) and will return to the store to purchase another one. Very annoying.

I installed 7 of these to replace the earlier version produced by Kidde, which to my surprise all died on the same day (I didn't know these are programmed to self-destruct after a certain length of time. I did not have to do the initial wiring or install the ceiling mount, as that was all installed when the house was built in 2009. For me, it was as easy as plug n play, it was easy and painless. If you're installing more than a couple of these, you may want to use ear plugs as the sound is deafening when running the functionality test. They've been in for 6 weeks now, and thankfully we've no blips, beeps, or false alarms. I'm very satisfied overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install Fortunately we haven't needed to use the alarm yet for either smoke or carbon monoxide. But it is a good upgrade on the contractor grade alarms that the builder installed
