Product claims of lead mitigation

Is there any supporting evidence that this product actually makes lead-painted surfaces safer to work with? Safer than painting over with any other latex paint? Most of the reviews support its ability to adhere to leaded paint, but say nothing about this product's primary selling point - "treatment".

Ecobond can in fact be used for interior either as a primer or finish coat. For exterior it is suggested for primer use only. Hope this helps. Please contact us directly with any additional questions. ECOBOND®LBP, LLC

Great question! We are not aware of any other paint application that makes claim of actually treating and sealing lead paint applications. As part of our research and development we are constantly striving for the latest technology, yet at the moment offer no clear formula. If your intention is to keep the integrity of a wood substrate, keep in mind Ecobond is not only a leave on paint application, yet can be used to remove existing lead paint while suppressing the lead dust particles while rendering the lead waste as non hazardous for disposal. Once you have safely removed the lead paint applications, you can now perhaps use a clear polyurethane to show of that beautiful wood texture!

Answer:
No clear product as of yet. The newer formula however has eliminated the texture once associated while still offering the same treatment technology in addition to excellent adhesion properties.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 40 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Gloppy finish I can't speak to how well this product does its intended job of treating lead paint (perhaps that deserves a higher rating) but the consistency of the paint was very gritty and made for a very poor finish on interior woodwork. According to the Ecobond website, there is a newer formula of this product (called Lead Defender Pro) that is supposed to be smoother, lower VOC and less costly too. It was hard to tell what version I had purchased from Home Depot, but I concluded based on stated VOCs that it was most likely the older formulation. The grit drove the painter crazy and the finish was disappointing. May 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked just fine The product went on like an ordinary primer, albeit a little thicker. Good coverage, no odor June 30, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by paint didnot work Removed a lot of old paint chips that could possibly be removed.Cleaned off all surfaces using wet cleaner..Gave it 2 coats of this product and did not pass inspection..Said I needed to remove all paint completely ,down to the wood..I did all this by directions...Not satisfied..A lot of work I did.. It did apply easily no problem with that.. Inspector said it would eventually weather off after a years or so..Now since I have to do it all over and stripped down to the wood I will use regular primer and regular paint.. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Application Finally no texture!! Purchased Ecobond two years ago for our porch, while this time found lead in our family room. While the old formula worked great it had texture. Someone finally got smart and it now has a smooth finish. We were also pleasantly surprised when it passed a lead swipe test. Great product guys!! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cover that Leadbase w/Eco-Seal No need to get rid a antique molding w/this product May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does the Job It worked very well on a railing with old chipping paint. It softened and filled very nicely. Bright white May 17, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Too thick The consistency is more of a paste than a paint. Very difficult to work with. May 10, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Paint arrived quickly, paint itself is so so From what I have read on the ecobond lbp page, their testing shows that this paint works. HOWEVER, it was like trying to paint with plaster. Plaster full of sand. I emailed with the company and they told me to add up to 10oz of water per gallon. I did that and was able to use the paint. It was still hard to use, but it stuck to the wall once we added water. Before that, it was falling off of the wall as we painted it. March 22, 2016
