Customer Questions & Answers

Is this a fully certified encapsulant that is accepted as a permanent form of lead abatement with proper application?

Asked by: AW
Ecobond is Not encapsulant. Fiberlock LBC is.

if you want another finish or color than flat white, can you paint over this product with other paints?

Asked by: pete
Yes. This is meant to be either a primer or a flat interior paint. The color is flat off white (not super bright white). It is an excellent primer.

Can you use this to put over lead paint surfaces. I need paint to go over window sills and placez with lead paint chips

Asked by: Colleen
Yes. This has a flat finish though. So use this as a primer on the window sills, and then cover it with semi gloss.

Product claims of lead mitigation

Is there any supporting evidence that this product actually makes lead-painted surfaces safer to work with? Safer than painting over with any other latex paint? Most of the reviews support its ability to adhere to leaded paint, but say nothing about this product's primary selling point - "treatment".
Asked by: Jerry
Ecobond, Lead Defender® Paint is used as a leave on application to seal and treat lead in addition for removal practices both treating and sealing lead prior to disposal. Used on numerous projects nationwide, Ecobond Lead, Defender® using EPA test methods not only treats and seals lead but is responsible for reducing the bio-availability, leaching, and suppressing the harmful lead dust particulates during RRP by up to 99% (EPA method 1311). In addition, due to the ECOBOND®LBP patented natural phosphate reagent reduces the bio-availability by up to 75% (EPA 9200.1-86 non-fasting pH 2.2). This not only assists in Lead Safe Practice Rules, but RCRA and Air Quality Sample Compliance readings as well, thus potentially saving thousands in hazardous disposal fees. 1 gal. Lead Defender PRO Off White Flat Interior/Exterior Paint and Primer Lead Paint Sealant and Treatment is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks to do the job Product seems to be of good quality to do what is intended - thick consistency to cover chipped paint and seal it up. I am a DIYer and easily applied this myself. Went on easily and dried fairly quickly. Once dried, it looked to have adhered well and sealed up the old lead paint nicely and I was able to paint over it with standard paint/primer. Time will tell if this holds up. Does have a strong smell.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from so far so great. First time using. It does leave a texture, which in my recent case was prefferable, because the house was so rough, with chipped and pealed paint. Went on great. When done, it looked amazingly even. It will be 10 years before i can comment on the durability and longevity, but so far, it performed awesome.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product covers very well, but a bit poor on latex areas This product looks great once applied. Application was easy and paint smell was non existent. It did cover very thin where latex paint was already; two coats did a satisfactory job for these areas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This product was just what i needed for my project. I am refurbishing two old barn doors and a couple other shaker doors. It is very thick like glue, but i like that because my doors had chipping paint and seems like the thickness will cover better. You can see the old paint through where it's chipping but i wanted a rough finish anyway. It was very easy to paint and glaze over too. Will be using on all my projects that i might suspect old lead paint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thick and Chunky Upon opening the can I was shocked at how thick it was. I used the paint in a sprayer but had to thin it with water. After spraying my furniture there are some very small gritty chunks so I will need to sand everything again before I apply the semi gloss top coat. It applies thick and looks like it will work well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Seems ok This is a thick primer, so I'm assuming it provides adequate protection from a lead paint undercoat. However, it dries to a rough, chalky surface so it can't be used on anything that you want to look smooth and polished.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to work with, covers well. It is easy to work with, goes on easy, covers well. We use it for our encapsulation of lead, don't know long term but short term it has good adhesion. I wish that the store would carry it so it wouldn't have to be ordered, sometimes it is hard waiting for product when you are in process of regulated lead work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Peace of Mind I have mixed feelings about this product. My house is nearly 300 years old. We have lead paint. We initially painted over everything when we moved in a decade ago, but we have a baby now, and I need to be certain that everything is solidly covered. Naturally we don't have the $$k to abate all of the paint in the house, so this sounded like a good plan. There isn't too much out there about this product, but what there is seemed positive enough, and we don't have anything to lose, right? It's pricey, but it brings peace of mind. The product goes on well. When it dries there is a grainy texture. I'm not certain why, or what this texture does to help encapsulate the old paint, but if you live in an old house there is already so much uneveness that this really doesn't matter. Putting latex paint over this I found I needed two coats, as opposed to just one coat where I did not use the EcoBond. I did try and flake off a piece of the old paint (that would have easily flaked before applying the EcoBond), and the paint wouldn't budge. So, all in all, I would have to say that the EcoBond did the trick. I gave it three stars, because I really don't know about the claims that are made. I just hope that they are in fact true and that all my sills and frames are safer than they were before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the Job It worked very well on a railing with old chipping paint. It softened and filled very nicely. Bright white

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lead treatment that goes on like paint, I like it! I was pleasently surprised that the lead treatment is just like regular latex paint primer. It took an overcoat with no problem after 24 hours. The white base color worked well with the beige BEHR Interior/Exterior.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great My gf's and my first apartment and the landlord gave us a pamphlet about lead paint. I asked my dad about it and he researched it and told us what to do. He gave us a gallon of Ecobond LBP and 2 quarts of Glidden High Gloss Latex paint and on Friday after work and before moving in, my brother and my roomie and I masking taped and painted all the window sills and trims and the inside of the front door with the Ecobond primer. We used less than half the can and it wasnt' smelly. The next morning it was dry and there were some bumps that we didnt' notice when it was wet, but it wasn't bad. My gf and i painted on the Glidden while my brother and his friend did most of the moving in (hehe). The Glidden was a little smelly, but not bad. We used all the first can. Anyway by Sunday the apartment looked awesome. We were settled in and the new painted areas are smooth and beautiful! They shine much more than before we moved in. I only marked average on value cuz I didn't buy it and I dont' know how much it should cost, but we're very happy with the results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from paint didnot work Removed a lot of old paint chips that could possibly be removed.Cleaned off all surfaces using wet cleaner..Gave it 2 coats of this product and did not pass inspection..Said I needed to remove all paint completely ,down to the wood..I did all this by directions...Not satisfied..A lot of work I did.. It did apply easily no problem with that.. Inspector said it would eventually weather off after a years or so..Now since I have to do it all over and stripped down to the wood I will use regular primer and regular paint..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gloppy finish I can't speak to how well this product does its intended job of treating lead paint (perhaps that deserves a higher rating) but the consistency of the paint was very gritty and made for a very poor finish on interior woodwork. According to the Ecobond website, there is a newer formula of this product (called Lead Defender Pro) that is supposed to be smoother, lower VOC and less costly too. It was hard to tell what version I had purchased from Home Depot, but I concluded based on stated VOCs that it was most likely the older formulation. The grit drove the painter crazy and the finish was disappointing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Coats ok Coats ok it is about the consistancy of Elmers glue. My main complaint is that it does not do well for priming over old oil based stains. The stains still leached through and is a bit gritty looking after it dries. I had to prime with a stain blocking primer. Then put 2 top coats over the area I as painting. Also lightly sanded the stain blocking primer before I put the finish on. Even though I had to do a few extra steps it is well worth it to encapsulate possible old lead paint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thick paint I did notice that I was able to make the paint go much further by adding a fraction of water that they recommend. It does leave a strong paint smell for much longer than expected. Saying that, it's the only lead-paint encapsulation really in the market, so thanks for that. Con: Home Depot's shipping was so slow! Should offer an option to pay to receive the product faster, but it's nice they offer free shipping in this economy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lead paint primer sealant helped with cleanup I used Ecobond to seal the lead dust and peeling paint during our room renovation. The stuff stuck well and we had almost no lead dust to clean up. I think this will be safer for our family. Great Product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easier method of dealing with lead paint Without the means to test for lead paint, but assuming its presence from the age of the house and condition of paint, I used this paint treatment, which was as easy to apply as paint and hopefully as effective in neutralizing the lead as scraping and sanding, without the attendant risks in those methods. I painted over it for appearance's sake. I allowed the treatment to dry 12 hours before painting. The treatment gums up the brush fairly quickly but the brush washes out easily with water only. This was used on exterior trim and not on large areas, and was used over areas with minimal scraping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PRODUCT !! Goes on very easy, seals EXCELLENT !!!! This is a wonderful solution if you have lead paint or if you are just wondering if you do. It is just a top of the line quality paint. I would highly recommend to everyone. It is only sold on line but ships fast and Home Depot sends an email of when it will arrive. Wish they did sell it in the stores! I am in rural area and older homes - you never know what has been used before. I would think in urban rental market this would be must to use. Great peace of mind using it to be safe.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Paint arrived quickly, paint itself is so so From what I have read on the ecobond lbp page, their testing shows that this paint works. HOWEVER, it was like trying to paint with plaster. Plaster full of sand. I emailed with the company and they told me to add up to 10oz of water per gallon. I did that and was able to use the paint. It was still hard to use, but it stuck to the wall once we added water. Before that, it was falling off of the wall as we painted it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Application Finally no texture!! Purchased Ecobond two years ago for our porch, while this time found lead in our family room. While the old formula worked great it had texture. Someone finally got smart and it now has a smooth finish. We were also pleasantly surprised when it passed a lead swipe test. Great product guys!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covering lead paint I had researched several options for dealing with the lead paint on an older house we own. This paint was exactly what I was looking for. It spread on easily with brush and roller. It covered the amount of sq ft as stated. The smell is minimal.
Date published: 2016-08-16
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very gritty This paint creates a very gritty texture. It does not go on smoothly or evenly. It may address the lead paint hazards but does not leave a very attractive finish even with a satin paint over it.
