Customer Questions & Answers

How do I remove outdoor lead-basaed paint using Ecobond? House is 100 yrs old and has been painted many times, paint flaking off now.

House is 3.5 stories high and has been painted many times over the 100 yrs. Paint is flaking off in some spots.Front of ouse only & it has wood shaker-like shingles. I'd like to paint it myself. Do I paint Ecebond on and then scrape the loose paint or should I scrap it first after wetting and then apply Ecobond and the scrape it again. I might do the job myself as the owner. I'm in PA.

Another great question! It actually works both ways. Those poor areas that are peeling, and or flaking will in fact have to be prepped to allow for the new paint to adhere. The good news is Ecobond can be used prior to removal where it not only helps to suppress the lead dust particulates, yet renders the waste as non hazardous for disposal. Once you have a sound prepped surface Ecobond can then be applied to seal and treat any remaining lead. Hope this helps. Anymore questions can be answered by contacting us directly. Your Home Depot Paint Pro offers free tinting on the ECOBOND® LBP, LLC product line. Keep in mind while they are able to achieve light pastels this option offers excellent primer coverage for both interior and exterior applications while for interior can also be used as a finish coat while still treating and sealing those lead paint applications. The Pro Version offers a higher quality resin and greater hideability. Remember, while both products are great for indoor use either as a finish coat or primer, for those exterior jobs are suggested for primer use only. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage We tried this on a 3bd/2ba 1940s fix-up with some lead paint and mildew concerns and it worked great on both the interior and exterior. When we opened the pails, there was some separation with a thick base and about a half inch of liquid on top, but it mixed out well and applied easily. The ecobond covered the walls really well and accepted the satin topcoat well with no streaks or bleeding through. We were going to prime the kitchen cabinets, too (they were painted and in poor condition), but we decided to replace all the cabinets and left a natural finish. We also were planning to contract for exterior vinyl siding, but it was easier to prime with ecobond and paint with behr ourselves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best option for lead abatement! I had purchased this product from the manufacturer 2 or 3 year ago and my painting contractor continues to use it on historic properties. This product actually penetrates lead paint and chemically changes it to lead phosphate which is harmless. You can apply the product, wait the required time and then sand to bare wood if you want. When faced with building scaffolding, wrapping (multiple times) a 3 story Victorian with specially EPA approved plastic, and multiple hazmat suits for painters, this was definitely the only option for me. It's a good idea if you're a diy'er and have lead paint, use this product. If you're a contractor working where EPA agents can give you a nearly $40,000 fine, this stuff is priceless. It's also priceless for your customer when compared to EPA approved paint abatement.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Satisfied This product worked reasonably well. I wish the description had been more clear about the fact that it has a distinct texture. However, it covered thickly, and very close to how much the barrel indicated it should. It certainly had almost no odor which was great since we had to apply so much of it to cover all of our old lead painted walls.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good... This is a very expensive product... for a paint. It's a very cheap product for a lead paint encapsulant. I've found it fairly difficult to work with, even though I bought the "Pro" (better surface finish) version. It paints on like Elmer's Glue - extremely thick and hard to get a good surface texture. HOWEVER, I'm still very pleased with it. Why? First, I've confirmed that no lead is coming through the finish. Second, this product's thickness is an advantage when covering an old, less-than-perfect paint. I removed any loose material prior to using this product, but still had plenty of poor texture from the paint left on the surface. This product covered all of that up enough that my next coat should produce the finish I want. Moreover, it's so thick it actually has good gap-filling properties - the manufacturer doesn't specify this, but nail holes and other imperfections are no problem. It fills them with minimal shrinkage. Although the manufacturer does specify that this can be sprayed with an airless sprayer, I had the best success with brushing, then top-coating with a sprayed-on acrylic exterior paint for a final finish. I'm very pleased with the overall result. It's too early to tell how long this will last, but if I've bought even a few years' more life out of the current porch, it will have been money well spent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ecobond Lbp The coverage isn't that great but it seems to work well enough, went to other stores to find similar products they didn't have them available because of the VOC's, it pours and goes on like a paste, overall satisfied with the procedure, wish it was a little cheaper

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It was the only lead based primer I could order. Not sure! It came promptly and when I opened it, it was very thick. After painting half of what I needed to I realized it was leaving a med grade sandpaper texture! Not only that but it didn't really leave a solid coat, but one very sheer. I ended up resanding everything after I was done. Was the sandpaper texture necessary? I do see now that it is in the description but I'll replace the trim before I do this again.
