Questions & Answers

Would HomeDepot tint primer for customers?

Asked by: DIYbeginner
Yes- They will tint any portion of the primer you would like. So if you have an old paint can you can dump some out and they will tint only what you need. Hope this helps!

Why does this work on drywall but not plaster?

Asked by: Goaliee
Hi Goaliee, Thanks for writing in with your question. Plaster tends to have a more chalky and smoother finish than new porous drywall. Our PVA primer is not the ideal product to use for a project with drywall and plaster. I would recommend our Kilz 2 primer instead which can be used on both. Have a great day! Regards, Giovanna

Can this be used under satin and gloss paints, or is it only for flat and eggshell finishes?

Asked by: TT
Hello TT, Thanks for your question. Our PVA primer is only designed to serve as an undercoat for flat, matte, or eggshell finishes. For satin and semi-gloss paint topcoats, we can recommend using our Kilz 2 Latex primer which is good for both interior and exterior surfaces. Best wishes! -Joshua

Will it work to cover wallpaper

Asked by: Red
This is fairly ambiguous as most primers will at some point cover certain materials and not others. If a non-shine wallpaper sure it would cover, but be warned with any wet application to existing wallpaper you could have lifting and then a huge mess. Wallpaper removal seems overwhelming at first, but with proper tools and techniques it is quite easy and a rather quick process which in the long run will save you many headaches.

He had never used it & was skeptical because it went on splotchy. He came back after 1 week to paint & was truly amazed at how well this primer covered the spackle & it actually looked like the walls had a coat of white paint on them. Paint went on smoothly & job was done with just one coat of paint. We highly recommend for new sheetrock as a sealer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This was recommended to me by Home Depot salesman who said it was the best primer for new drywall... This was recommended to me by Home Depot salesman who said it was the best primer for new drywall or skim coated drywall. I had skim coated damaged walls. I thoroughly cleaned the room (ceiling, trim, walls, floor) before priming. I followed the directions - did 2 coats 6 hours apart. Waited 18 hours before painting and then waited 6 hours between paint coats. When I removed the tape, the primer and the paint peeled up in sheets. The primer did not adhere. All the money, time and effort involved in days and days of skim coating, sanding, cleaning, taping, priming and painting has been completely wasted. I've skim coated, primed and painted many rooms before and never had any problems. I wish I'd stuck to my regular primer. I'm just livid.

I stopped to get the primer "shook" at the paint desk. The lady behind the counter asked me what I was working on. She advised me to put back the primer that I selected and go with Killz PVA. Not only was it cheaper, it did the trick. Like some of the other posters stated, my garage now looks painted just with the primer on the walls. Highly recommended! Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I used this PVA Primer for the first time today on newly plastered walls that were finished 5 days ago. I've primed lots of fresh plaster over the years and I can say without a doubt that this is the best product I've ever used. It went on easily, coverage was great and as another reviewer stated, it looks like a finished coat of flat wall paint. In fact, my wife suggested that I just go with the primer and start installing the baseboard and trim. I will be adding a topcoat of flat wall paint but again, the PVA looks really good all on its own. PVA is my new go to primer. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Kilz makes several varieties and various price points. I have only tried this one. I used it to cover a new skim coat of dryway to repair damage caused by wallpaper removal. It did the job fine!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New drywall Works great and looks great without painting after use. It blends the tape joints where sparkle is used with the grey drywall. I would be be happy just using the primer without any further paint. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I needed to prime two rooms that had a mix of new drywall and skim coated walls. This covered everything and didn't leave any flashing after the paint was applied and it dried quickly. I was able to prime and paint in the same day. I even used this to prime some MDF cabinets in the room and it covered everything in 1 coat. I would advise to buy a little more product than you think, I bought one can for each room (all 4 walls and ceiling in each room) and needed to go back and buy one more can to finish the last wall in the last room. I would suggest this to anyone who needs to prime new drywall or skim coated walls.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT USE ON GREENBOARD! I recently finished my basement. On the outside walls I used "greenboard" . To prime the greenboard and regular gypsum on interior walls I used Pro-X PVA primer. The PVA adhered wonderfully to the regular gypsum, but still after 4 months it has hardly adhered to the greenboard. I used it as directed and after a few days of drying I topcoated with 2 coats of regular Olympic latex paint. If I put a piece of blue painters tape anywhere on those greenboard walls and pull it off, the paint and primer come off in a chunk exposing the greenboard. Nowhere on the product does it state not to use it on greenboard.
