Product Overview

Someone in the U.S. dies in a home fire every three hours, according to the National Fire Protection Association. If you live in a three story home the Kidde Escape Ladder provides a means of escape. It stores easily under the bed or near a window, and is quick and easy to use. The ladder is intended to supplement (not replace) the more important fire protection principles of fire drills, emergency exit plans, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, etc. Your family escape plan should include as a minimum two means of escape from each room (door and window), a meeting place to gather outside the residence, and call 911 or local emergency services after the exit.

  • KL-3S ladder is approximately 25 ft. L, the fabric material is nylon 6 with thickness of 0.075 in. W 1.00 in. load rating of 1,000 lb. and meets 16CFR
  • No tools or assembly required, and the tangle free design makes the 3 story ladder easy to deploy when seconds matter
  • Ladder attaches quickly to most common windows
  • 5-year limited warranty

Why is this item a ONE-TIME-ONLY product?

I read on another site that a customer stated this was a one time only ladder and they she wouldn't even be able to have a trial run with her children because of that. How does the company expect consumers to know if this product works in a pinch? So I'm nervous about purchasing something that's only going to work once. I would like to test it out to make sure it's what I want when I really need it.
Thanks.

I can't say this with 100% certainty without talking to the manufacturer, but I suspect what they're referring to is "one time use" in the case of an actual fire (the stated purpose of the ladder, remember, is because you're escaping a fire). The window frame depth is 11." My window frame depth is 7", but to compensate, I built a small 18" x 12" x 5" x plywood box to extend our window frame to the required 11". When the ladder is attached to the box, it's very secure and doesn't move around at all.

Hello. In reference to your question, The minimum width of escape window for use of the ladder is 16 inches (.41 meters). The maximum thickness of the escape window opening is 11 inches (.28 meters). If your window sill is 14 inches thick, then this escape ladder will not work for you. This would be true for both of the escape ladders we sell. If you would like further information about this, please call Read More

What is the thickness of the package this ladder comes in? I need to store under a bed frame that's only about 31/2" off the floor.

The box dimensions are 17" high, 13.5" wide, and 6.5 inches deep. I store our ladder in its box under the bedroom's sliding glass doors. If visitors come over, I toss the box into the closet.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lighting fixture for bathroom The product itself was excellent....the instructions, not so much. We spent an inordinate amount of time trying to position the post pegs to attach the light fixture. I ended up paying almost $300 to have an electrician resolve the problem which is a very simple solution. We reread your instructions and they are abysmal. June 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by works great, but i hope i never have to use it for its intended purpose. I will say up front that while i eventually intend to have this product be available for use for its intended purpose (emergency exit in case of a fire) that is *not* why I bought it. I bought it specifically so that I would have a safe way to climb in and out of an ever-deepening hole in my attic floor, where a chimney is steadily shrinking brick by brick. And in that respect it has performed admirably. I obviously had to secure it other than it was meant to (it's meant to hook over a window sill - I had to bolt it to attic rafter joists), but even though it's coming over an open space rather than against the side of a house it's perfectly fine climbing up and down on. I would also say that i hope neither I, nor anyone else who buys it, ever has to use it in case of a fire. Not because there's anything wrong with the ladder, but because it means the house would be on fire... August 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Feeling safer already! We bought a 3 level home on a lake in October 2015. Since our master bedroom is on the THIRD level, I was concerned about a "fire escape." My husband and I are "fluffy" people, so we needed a heavy duty ladder--this one is AWESOME! It will hold up to 1000 lbs and is for a one time use. Home Depot personnel were AWESOME at helping me find just what I was looking for! February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product, Horrible "store to home" shipping Ordered the ladder from a store that didn't have it in stock, It arrived via UPS to my doorstep in a wad of busted, tuct taped cardboard. Not blaming UPS but the store that shipped it. It was a light weight cardboard that the sending store simply slapped a UPS sticker on and shipped it out. It would be the equivalent of dropping a box of cereal in the mail with postage on it. HOWEVER! The ladder arrived functional, cosmetically damaged but its a fire ladder. Only con I see is that I wished to test or trial run the ladder but its stamped on the front "SINGLE USE ONLY". I did practice setting it in the window and it was done with ease. If you don't need the three story, DONT GET IT. It adds a little more weight to the ladder which may make it difficult for smaller people. Overall happy with the product. October 6, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by One time use only! Why would you make a one time use only on and fire escape ladder. Every program you read or see, tells you to have your family practice your fire escape plan in your house. With this I practice, now I have to buy another one. Come on now! July 21, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Ladder I purchased this fire escape ladder for my daughter and her family. The live in an apartment on 2nd floor. Small patio overlooking lawn area. Have always thought about..what if there is a fire. So thankfully this ladder has not been used and hopefully never will. But we have some peace of mind knowing this is ready. I have not seen ladder but she was pleased with it, seemed decent quality. Her young sons right away were taking it out of packaging and checking it out. April 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by a. great ladder for urban appartment Great Sturdy ladder. Have not had to use it yet ..it allows a person on third floor to easily escspe and climb down to safety. July 8, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by disappointed The ladders will be useful in the event of a fire, but they are for a ONE TIME USE ONLY (read fine print on box). Therefore it is not very practical if you have a family and want to have a drill and demonstrate how to use it in the event of an emergency. April 29, 2015
