I have five of these installed, manufactured in Dec 2014, installed in May 2015. Today is June 8, 2016, and I had to deal with a 14 ft extension ladder to get the DARN thing down when the battery failed.
Don't waste your money on this.
I'm a 67 year old woman living alone. This was not fun nor a good investment.

Bought this for a new addition (laundry/pantry). After 1 year it started singing for no apparent reason. Called Kidde and they sent a replacement and indicated that I would need to return the defective alarm, but never sent a mailer for it. After 15 months the replacement started to sing again with no apparent reason. Now I have another smoke alarm to properly dispose of.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by SBNorcal These alarms are bad
I bought 3 of them in 2013. The main problem is that they go off randomly and there is no way to reliably turn them off without destroying them. Two of them lasted about a little more than a year, and one of them failed in 3 years. Not a product I would rely on.

We had this alarm less than two years before it failed. And the unit is sealed, so the battery cannot be replaced. No more Kidde for us, thank you.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by John Not for replacing a wired alarm
If you are buying this to be a new installation or replace an old battery-operated alarm, no problem. If you are replacing a wired alarm, you have a job ahead of you. Kidde decided to forego all the conventional ways to mount an alarm and invent a new one. So if the old alarm has an electrical box behind it, the mounting system for this alarm won't work. So I found an old metal switch cover and drilled holes in it to match the Kidde mount. Then I screwed the Kidde mount to the switch cover, and screwed the switch cover to the box. It's installed, but took me roughly an hour to engineer and build it. Kidde needs to include with this alarm an adapter plate to adapt it to an electrical box. I knocked this rating down a couple of stars because of the cheesy non-standard mounting system.

I installed 3 of these today. The plastic screw broke all three times so I had to drill three additional holes for each unit to install them using real screws. Pain in the butt. Hopefully I won't get the phantom alarms.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Ringo These will not last 10 years
I bought 4 of these Aug 2014. Two of the 4 have went bad already and when they go bad the alarm goes off constantly. I will be replacing then with the older style ones.
