Product Overview

(Note: If product is not available to order in your area that is due to nighttime temperatures. Product may not cure and/or track in late Fall and early Spring applications). Latex-ite 4.75 Gal. Color Grade Blacktop Driveway Filler/Sealer in Brick Red is the first tinted sealant for blacktop. Color grade is a ready-to-use, low VOC, water based sealer designed to beautify and protect your blacktop driveway with color. Color grade is a durable, tinted filler or sealer that resists hot tire pick-up, chemicals and leaves a non-skid finish. For use on exterior blacktop only (previously sealed or unsealed). Not for use on concrete. Not for use on commercial parking lots. Check the weather and make sure no rain is forecast and it is at least 55°F at night (a cold driveway will not allow the sealer to cure properly and may track).

California residents: see  Proposition 65 information

  • Approximately 400 sq. ft. to 500 sq. ft. coverage for good condition, smooth or previously sealed blacktop
  • Approximately 300 sq. ft. to 400 sq. ft. coverage for moderate condition, minor cracking or graying blacktop
  • Approximately 200 sq. ft. to 300 sq. ft. coverage for poor condition, rough or unsealed blacktop
  • Coverage will vary based on blacktop condition
  • 2 Coats (maximum) must be applied to achieve color uniformity completing each coat in one continuous application to prevent color shading
  • Apply with squeegee (no rollers) - brushes are fine for the edges
  • Remember: clean your driveway thoroughly so sealer will bond and make sure you do not seal when it is cold outside, it must be at least 55° at night for sealer to properly cure and last
  • Do not seal in early spring or late fall as the sealer will not last; it will not cure properly and may track
  • Ideal for sealing hairline cracks in blacktop driveways and walkways with color
  • Durable, low VOC formula
  • Car traffic ready 24 hours minimum, longer dry time recommended in higher humidity or cooler temperatures
  • Wait at least 30-days before rinsing or cleaning, use a mild detergent as needed, areas that have scuffed can be cleaned with soap, water and brush after 30-days, use only a mild or diluted soap or detergent, the use of pressure washers and abrasive cleaners should be limited to avoid sealer failure
  • An annual touch-up may be required in some areas subject to frequent tire traffic
  • Product may look orange in pail but will dry brick red
  • We recommend you continuously mix or ‘batch’ product during application for color uniformity
  • Color streaks will fade once fully cured
  • Color grade will not work on stamped asphalt
  • For large jobs it’s a good idea to use a new 30 gallon trash can, open and pour in 4 or 5 pails and using a mud flap and drill, mix as this will help you achieve consistent color

We have a stamped asphalt driveway in a brick stamp. It's rather old but the original color has faded and no indication it has ever been sealed.

So I need to know if this works on stamped asphalt and also how many I should purchase per square or per square foot? What is the normal coverage amount?

Answer:
Yes that is what its best for in that it adds colour to your pattern . As mentioned a roller works and use a small brush for the pock marks and a four inch brush for the brick pattern groves and then always re roll those areas . I covered a six foot by twelve foot area and used less than half a bucket .

Answer:
Yes you can. I suggest you use a small broom to apply this product straight out of the pail. It sweeps into the grooves better than a roller.i used 1can of gray and 2 cans of red. My driveway was also painted about 6 years ago, so I only neaded one coat. It covered a 25 x 45 foot area. All colored paint has the sealer in it.

Answer:
We do not recommend Latexite Color Grade for stamped asphalt. In order to get a proper application it is necessary to use a squeegee to apply the Color Grade product. Two thin coats is what is recommended with a squeegee. Squeegee will fill in the stamped asphalt, a may cause the material to peel.

Why does it say not to use rollers? It seems that several customers have rolled it on. Seems necessary to use a roller or sprayer on stamped asphalt.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Color Grade Blacktop Driveway Filler/Sealer in Brick Red The product is very thick and covers well. The material does settle in the container and requires a power mixer to obtain uniform consistency. I applied the coating in cool weather so it took more than a day to dry. I would choose a sunny day above 70 degrees. It also rained the evening after I applied the coating which did make some of the pigment run but not drastically. So pick you application day carefully. I underestimated the quantity required so the last part of the coat was thin. For a first coat over an irregular and porous surface extra product should be ordered. I did get some peeling of the material over fresh patches so it would be good to wait a season before coating fresh patches. Use of a snow blower in the winter on the driveway did remove some of the coating but it held for the most part. I am satisfied with the result and some of my neighbors complimented me on the appearance. I purchased three additional 5-gal containers this spring to give the drive a good second coat. It is more expensive than traditional black top seal coat but I think the expense is worth it. It was suggested that the buckets of material be overturned before opening to ease mixing. I did this but found that there was leakage of some moisture out of one of the buckets. So If you choose to invert them watch to see that there are no leaks. I would consider having a professional apply the coating if are not accustomed to the procedure. It took me many hours to do what a professional could probably do in about an hour. Overall I am satisfied. May 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Driveway sealer Product was easy. To use. I found that using a small broom from the dollar store worked better than a roller. My driveway is stamped asphalt so it was easier to sweep into the grooves. I used two colors for a custom look. July 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Used over freshly sealed "black" black top and covered nicely! I used this product to make a basketball court on our driveway. I found the best way to apply was a "very rough surface" roller on a long handle. Product is very thick and covers well, but I think it helped the driveway was recently sealed. Our basketball court looks great! August 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Charming old look for an ancient driveway First, and this is important(!), use a spiral mixer (5 gallon length) attachment on your drill. Otherwise it takes forever to stir each bucket. This asphalt sealer is easy to apply (we used both a squeegee and a broom), and the driveway is utterly transformed into a faded rosy-brick-colored road. Everyone driving by stops to compliment it. Our driveway is very long and hadn't been sealed since the year dot, so it took 13 5-gallon buckets which got kind of pricey...but it's totally worth it! October 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great pop and much more sophisticated look rather than boring black I was a bit unsure at first but wanted something more than a black asphalt driveway. I had a one year old unsealed driveway so it was now or never. So I ordered a single pail to do an asphalt walkway before making the investment in an entire driveway. The first pail was difficult to mix (took about 20 minutes and was chunky ) even through I had turned it over the night before. I used a single speed 1/2" drill that was much too jerky for the material. I had not been delivered with the drill mix kit. Once mixed, it turned out nice looking after 24 hours. But while it's curing the color can look uneven and miserable especially if you have mix of shade and sun and uneven time curing. On new asphalt, I got about 200 sq-ft of coverage. TIP: do not forget to estimate for the edges- Edges use much more than nice flat top. You are much better off online ordering 20% more than you think you need and return the extra to your local HD than to try to skimp...Skimping will get you some streaks. (I ended up with a few but looks great overall). I did the driveway ordering 13 pails. All mixed much easier than the first pail I had ordered and they were a slightly darker color than the walkway pail. I also used a variable speed 1/2" lowspeed drill that was incredible smooth with no torque jerking- It's almost like the 13 pails had been mixed just prior to shipping to me. Each only took two to three minutes to mix. I had estimated I only would need 12 pails to do two coats on the driveway and then do a second coat on the walkway. As it turned out, I used all 13 on the two coats on the driveway. (I got about 330 sq-ft coverage on second coat). And I had to wait and order another pail. (remember to account for the edges ahead of time!) I'm very happy with how it turned out- I dressed up the edges with pea stone and a brick edge. It's a head turner that will get your neighbors (and the even the UPS guy) to stop and ask how you did it. The stuff is pricey compared to standard sealer. I had 1800 sqft between drive and walkway. $900. So that works out to be about $500-600 to add color. Five hundred bucks is really not much to pop your street appeal for 2 to 4 years. The last pail arrived with the added mixer kit. I decided not to use it. The mixer I had was much longer that allowed me to stand up straight as I was mixing and move the end around the entire pail. I had no splatter problems. It turned out I lost the last coat/pail on the walkway due to being hit by a freak thunderstorm 6 hours after I put it down. (less than 10% chance of rain does not mean zero). $60 worth of product literally washed away. I'll likely need to wait until next spring to get a good second coat on the walkway. My drive/parking area abuts my back patio area- The brick color allows the parking area to double as extended patio area/courtyard for large parties. (cars get moved to the street/lawn). (Totally improved effect as compared to black asphalt). In summary, I think Latex-ite brick red sealer on asphalt is a great combination of beauty and practicality on driving and walking surfaces that need snow plowing, especially if you are willing to dress up the edges. I'll report next spring on how it held up to the snow thrower. September 14, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pleasing purchase The product came in a shipping container , and it was easy enough to open the pail and then stir the paint . Its a thicker product then I last used so it covered the asphalt path quite well . August 25, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product We had a 4200 square foot driveway on a house in Rye that needed to be sealed. I had seen red driveway sealer before, but I was unfamiliar with this product. I called the manufacturer for a sample and to to get answers to the few questions that I had. Having been in business for 35 years, I have never found a manufacturer to be so helpful - and that goes from the bottom to the very top! That product gave a stunning finish and I am sure it will last. My sincere thanks to John, who not only took the time to come to the site, but also for his guidence during the installation. I will use this whenever and wherever I can June 4, 2014
