Customer Questions & Answers

Will this pet door work in a vinyl storm door panel?

Will this pet door work in a vinyl storm door panel?
Asked by: Mike
Hello Mike, the PetSafe® Freedom™ Patio Panels are about ¾” thick and designed for left or right sliding glass doors. They are intended to be screwed into the frame of the sliding glass door. You will want to ensure that you are comfortable drilling into those materials as we can't ensure that these will work well with Vinyl sliding doors.

can a pet door be installed in a glass sliding door?
Asked by: corky
Thanks for your question! The Panel Pet Door Insert is designed for installation into most doors with a thickness of up to 1 ¾”. It may be possible to install it onto a glass surface, though some custom framing may be necessary to do so. For use in a sliding glass door, we would instead recommend looking for one of our Patio Panel products, which are specifically designed for installation into sliding glass doors. You can locate these by searching for "PetSafe Patio Panel" here on

I have this panel. The dog ruined it. Can it be replaced with the same panel?

Asked by: paulette0343
Hi there. Yes, it can be replaced with the same panel as the cut-out would be the same.

Most importantly, the closing panel for the door is a clip-on piece of plastic. If you are looking for a dog door that is even slightly burglar secure, this is absolutely not it. Anyone could, with a solid kick through the door flaps, pop this off or otherwise break through it. I have had to rig a 2x4 cross bar with a wood panel that sits against the plastic panel that to at least slow down any attempts at a break in. Also, the hinges holding the vinyl flaps are plastic and, at least in my case, have broken with the repeated in and out activity of my two dogs over the past two years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product! Looks good too! I have had several dog doors over the years. But in this house, the door I needed to install it in is very readily visible, and I really wanted it to look better than "that'll do." As most houses, it's a six-panel door, and I have tried before to install the dog door there with unattractive but serviceable results. Although this door cost a little more, the results were so much better and it was easier to install! I've had it in place for a month now and it works great. I'll never worry about it, if I move and have to do another door! My daughter and I installed it in a couple of hours, but we do have a little experience; your first one might take you longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We absolutely love this pet door. We installed this pet door in our new home after we had fences put in around the yard. I didn't know if we would be able to find a door that works in our panel door but it fits and looks great. We are in the Pacific Northwest and the door goes to the back yard. The double flaps are very good at keeping the warmth in and the cold out. Our two dogs, 60 and 80 lbs, and one of the cats, about 14 lbs. use this door several times a day and it appears to be holding up extremely well. I would recommend this door to anyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks good, works so-so First the good: this door looks great installed, and my handy man said it was easier to install than a traditional dog door. Now the bad: I got this door hoping that the double flaps would make it more energy efficient than a traditional single flap. That might be the case IF the two flaps ever aligned perfectly. They do not. They are always aligned either to one side or the other (stuck to one of the two bottom magnets) and the seal is broken making it only as efficient as a single flap door. Secondly, this door says it will fit a 100 lb dog but my 60 lb greyhounds have to crawl through it. I can't imagine a bigger dog would fit. Because of its size and placement there is no way to customize it to accommodate bigger dogs. I'm now considering getting a new door and going back to a larger, traditional dog door. I would only recommend this door for its looks and if you have the perfect size dog to go trough it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as intended! Easy to install, looks nice, and is perfect for my dog - HOWEVER - it did not come with all the screws necessary to install it so we had to go to HD and buy special screws that would fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! I read the other two reviews and had the same issue. Glass top and panel bottom. Super easy instal and it looks great. We ordered this over night for $30.00. Worth that if you want it now. If not do the free shipping offer. It has a snap in cover for security of critters. Not robbers. But we have a 90 pound male lab that I am pretty sure the bad guys will pass us up.
