Customer Questions & Answers

Why can't these stair treads be used outside?

I want to use them as exterior porch steps.
Asked by: PorchMaker
One major problem and one minor with your idea. The minor one is water and wood, especially if you have a freeze/thaw situation. The fortunate part is that white oak, unlike red oak, absorbs very little moisture and is not prone to the cupping, bending, and twisting that red oak can do when it gets wet. You major problem is the varnish, which I assume you will be using. Unless you use a spar varnish with a very high content of UV inhibitors you will have the age-old problem of the varnish flaking off after a few years. The UV rays penetrate the varnish, break down the outer layer of the wood, and then that along with the varnish breaks away from the main body of wood. Oops, just thought of a third problem. There is no way of know what type of glue was used in putting together the pieces of wood. If the manufacturer would come on here and tell us what they used it would be very helpful, since I like the idea of using these for porch steps. If I were doing this, and it was in a climate without extreme temperatures (some glues do not do well in very cold temps, or very hot for that matter), I would put on 2-3 coats of a very high-quality spar varnish prior to mounting. I then would mount them using face-mounted, small-headed 3" stainless deck screws. I would peg over the heads of the screws and then apply a final coat of varnish when in place (you could just varnish the under side with a couple of coats prior to placement and then do all of the rest after pegging the holes). After thoroughly drying I would apply anti-slip strips on each step, because they are going to get slippery with even small amounts of moisture.

What is the exact length?

Are these exactly 36" long or are they a little bit longer to accommodate stairs that may vary slightly in width?
Asked by: Eric
This tread is approximately 36''. The treads are not exactly uniform.

Are these treads designed to have only one " finish" side?

I purchased 3 of these treads and each leangth has one side with a major unusable flaw like big machined gouged from a sander , imperfect wood pices used or shredded edges.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good value but be carteful of defects HomeDepot online had the best deal on these treads by far. The price for the same product at Lxxxes was about 15$ more apiece. That's the good news. The bad news is that the quality control at Stairtek is not that good and one of the 10 treads was nearly unusuable. I was in a hurry, so I had to hold my nose and use it. Moral of the story is to have your order shipped to the store and look over each board carefully while there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unfinished Oak Treads (replacements for original painted versions in a 1948 home) The product itself was great (nice grain and good finish), but they arrived with water stains on one end. Not a problem for me, as I was cutting them down, but if you needed the full width they would have not been suitable. Thus only 4 stars. The stains were clearly from being on a wet floor BEFORE being packed, therefore caused by HD storage issues, not the manufacturer. Tip: Needs a powerful saw to cut them cleanly (I used an industrial table saw and got really clean cuts).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted Ordered two extra because I was concerned that I might need to replace a couple. As it turned out every piece was good. I can't believe they can offer free shipping on these heavy items. Also they arrived in just a few days. Could not be happier!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid white oak, as advertised these are solid white oak, not veneered, and made from approx. 3" slats of oak glued together. Few steps of this width are single piece, so that's to be expected. No discernible flaws, took stain well and matched perfectly the white oak floor they were installed next to. Price was well below any other white oak treads I could find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect solution I would definitely order these again in the future. They showed up on my doorstep in a couple of days and the wood was straight and beautiful. It was easier than going to the store (which did not stock these in white oak).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cupped product These treads came neatly packed but were cupped upon further inspection. I returned them which Home Depot is so great about.
