AnswerNo not really. The heat you may feel is radiated. Not from the base. We had ours on a plastic table top for years without problems. Great small space heater!!

It was slightly bigger than I expected from the photos. Used it a few days outdoors at night when it's cool but not windy. The top is cool to the touch a few minutes after shutting off.

Purchased this model to replace an outdoor floor model used...
Purchased this model to replace an outdoor floor model used on my back covered porch. It throws much more heat than other heaters I've used, but you do have to be sitting fairly close to it. Also, it doesn't tip over easily on windy days. Overall, I'm very happy with the outdoor heater.
