The LED lights come on and off according to a schedule. You can control the timing of these lights. You will need to consult your product guide or online guide. The lights are able to be adjusted for proper light and growth needs of the plants.

It should cycle the lights at the same time everyday. You decide which time of day they come on. If you want them on overnight, hold the light button in for 3 seconds right before dark. That will reset the cycle to come on at that time each day

The light stays on for a set period, the length is determined by what type of seeds you specified e.g herbs or flowers. If it is not staying on for the same length of time then that is not normal

It will shut off. Check the clock & light timer itself. There is a 12 hour & a 24 hour setting.

It is on a timer and depends on your choice as you set it up. For herbs it's 17 hrs!

The Classic 6 model has a few plant options on the front panel: herbs, flowers, etc. If set to the herb selection, the grow light should be on for 17 hours and off for 7 hours. The number of hours that the grow lights stay on is printed just below the plant type on the panel. If you unplug/replug the power cord it will reset the time of day that the lights come on. It's supposed to be on for 16 hours, off for 8 hours. The time you started it will determine when the 16 hours lights on cycles on but you can adjust this. You just need to hold in the LIGHT button for a few seconds and it will reset the timer to start the 16 hours over again. So I started mine around lunchtime but then it's on all night so I changed my start time to 6:30am by holding in the light button to reset it at 6:30am one morning. You can find most of this info in the instructions. I have found that when I accidentally unplugged the plug, it reset the timer again.

The light will turn off 12 -14 hours after it turns on

I don't see why there would be a problem starting any seeds. I didn't see any limitations listed in the directions.

The plants need to be started from pods.

I think growing tomato seeds are advanced and some of the more difficult to grow. However, they can be grown in this system. I recommend starting with radishes or beans.

Yes of course. Tomato seeds may take longer to germinate than herbs, but be patient.

I think you can use the seed starting system to start the tomato plants but the light does not raise high enough to grow them past seedling/young plant height.

Yes, seed pods for cherry tomatoes are available, but not included.

You would need to get a "dwarf" or container cherry tomato plant./seeds. You can certainly start the seeds and let the plants grow in this machine and then transplant elsewhere in order to let them get bigger.

Yes, there are different kits to buy. But I believe you can customize it somewhat, the light only raises so far that does restrict ones options.

Hello, and thanks for your questions. Regarding growing limits, you can grow plants that are 12" in height or less in the AeroGarden 6 model. Pods can be purchased online, and also seeds can be planted with the seed starting system enclosed. This is a great product and very easy to use. Perfect for families with children for year round gardening experiences. We love our Aerogarden.

I believe you can google the Aerogarden pods and you will see what is available. Have read online that many people use their own seeds and get replacement starter pods to use or even use other starter materials to start seeds (like foam sponge material). SAVE the pod inserts and plastic lids to use in the future.

You can search online for AeroGarden and find the packages that are offered. One item I have seen is pods without seeds so that you can use your own seeds. I expect that the limitation would mainly be the size of the plant or vegetable, full sized tomatoes probably wouldn't work for instance; and items like potatoes or radishes that grow underground wouldn't work.

As best we could tell, there was a seed in each of the startup pods for each of the 6 herbs. All came up except for the mint pod. I need to research who to contact to rectify this. The other 5 are doing nicely, but we're still early in the game. We also received the seed starting system, but again, these are used with seeds you purchase separately. carr

Six spots for pods, six pods (six different herbs). I just got mine, I haven't tried reusing the pods but it looks to me like it should be possible to use the growing medium from the seed starting system to reuse the plastic pods/holders. I don't expect to be able to reuse the growing medium to start new plants.

The seed sponges are not reusable. The 6 pods that come with the base system are pre-filled with sponges and herb seeds. The 30 seed starting tray includes 30 seed sponges to which you add your seeds. After you use all 36 seed starter sponges, you will need to purchase more seed starter sponges to grow more plants. Note that the 2 trays (6 and 30) use different ways to hold the seed starting sponges. The 6 plant tray has reusable seed sponge holders; the 30 plant tray has the sponge holders built in.

There are 2 trays: a 6 pod tray that uses sponge holding pods and a 30 seed sponge tray that does not use the pods. (The sponges are the long brown cylindrical items in the picture.) The 6 pod tray's 6 pods are reusable but the 6 sponges in them have been pre-planted with herbs and the sponges will need to be replaced for the second planting. The 30 seed sponges in the 30 sponge tray are available for your seeds. No sponges are reusable; you will need to buy those new for starting additional seeds.

The seed starting system comes with 36 seed pods that can only be used once, as they grow into plants as the seeds are rooting. This is similar to when you plant seeds into soil, and the root system develops into a plant. Now, you would not have to plant all of them at once if you did not want to, but the system works so very well, that it would be a shame not to use all of them during the one growing event. I have been very pleased with this aerogarden.

There are six (6) seed pods that come with the kit. They are all herbs. Two (2) are basil, one is (1) is thyme, one (1) is mint, one (1) is dill, one (1) is parsley. The pods are.plastic and you can reuse them. You will.just have to find the.proper mixture for the pods. You can make the mixture as well. The company also sells extra pods and mixture.kits. I bought 1 such kit and now I have plenty to work with and re-work with. Remember that if you start with herbs, then the rest should be herbs. If you want to grow flowers then all should be flowers, etc. This is because of the various timing of the lights to grow differt plants.

I used tap water and the aerogarden worked perfectly.

The instructions say to use distilled water if you can so that any minerals that come with tap or spring water will not interfere with the nutrients.

You can use any water but it must be room temperature when you add it. The instructions say to use distilled water, but I have used regular tap water with great results.

With this seedling starter kit you can grow a seedling for a tree. Make sure you know how to start a seedling first. There are many seeds that require prep before you can grown them. Most seeds can be started with out any prep. As long as they are not old seeds they should grow.

Yes, i think this would be very good for starting seedlings. Granted -they can only grow about 10" with the lights.

Yes. The 30 seed sponge starter tray is intended to only sprout the seeds and then when they are only a few inches tall, transplant them to either soil or another hydroponic system with more space to grow. The seedlings will be very close together in the 30 sponge tray. In the 30 sponge tray, you can space the seedlings out by placing wine corks in unused seed sponge holders.

I am not sure about those type of seeds, but I image it could be done.
