Questions & Answers

Why do they call it "cordless" when it uses string

I have had horrible luck with string trimmers in the past. Hoping to find something that uses blades instead of that annoying string. Why are these products called "cordless" when some kind of cord is used to knock down weeds? The category "cordess" raised my hopes, which are now dashed. Every product description I opened uses string, which is a variant of "cord."

I am 78 years old and I use mine to do my yard and it takes about 45 minutes. I do admit I rest a minute or so after 20 minutes. Battery is not a problem.

13 in. 40-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless 2-in-1 String Grass Trimmer/Lawn Edger with 1.5 Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1561.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best battery powered trimmer on the market I received this product as a gift for X-mas in 2013 and I used it for an entire season last year (2014). It performed better than I expected. I've been leery of getting a battery powered weed-whipper because past experience says that battery powered outdoor power equipment just isn't as good as the gas. But I have to say, this one stands up to most gas powered ones that I've used. It has plenty of power with the 40-volt battery and it lasts for about 20-30 minutes of average-powered use. If you turn it up to full power, you'll probably get 10-15 minutes out of one battery. But full power is really unnecessary for most things, unless you're clearing a field. What it boils down to, if you have a house in a subdivision (or similar sized property) then this is the perfect trimmer for you. No messing with gas, no messing with oil, no trouble getting it started. Just pop the battery in and you can do your trimming. I also like the twisting head so you can do your edging. Works pretty well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with this trimmer This is the first electric trimmer I have, but I really like it compared to the gas powered one I had before. No more need for fuel/oil mixture, no more clogged carburetors. Using the little power wheel, I find that a setting of 2-3 is sufficient for the trimming around the house and fence line. I also use this for the edging around the driveway and sidewalk, but for that I set it to maximum power (setting of 6) and it works very well for that too. The battery indicator is very helpful and it seems to take approximately 1 hour to charge the battery. (I have never fully depleted it though, I generally charge it when I have 1 of the 4 power indicators still lit). I also like that the unit is pretty light, and it's much quieter than the gas powered one I had. I've had this trimmer for a few months now, and living in Florida and mowing the lawn weekly, I got a lot of use out of it and I'm still very happy with the purchase. I charge my batteries right after I use the trimmer and a week or two later they are still fully charged and ready to go.

I rarely make an appliance or tool purchase w/o reading the reviews of others. And likewise I give reviews also. I purchased the grass trimmer/lawn edger AKA weed eater for my husband. B & D is our go to brand as we rarely have problems. In the past we've had the electric weed eater. This time my husband specifically asked for the batter powered. The fact that this model comes with a battery & charger helped in the decision making process. It came straight out of the box w/just 2 pieces to attach. I was concerned that the battery would need 24 hours for the first charge but NO! This thing was fully charged in 2 hours! It's light enough I can use it. It's simple to operate. The shaft on this one is longer than our old one so less bending. It seems even quieter?? The best part is the automatic feed! Great! The nylon thread comes out automatically! What a time saver! Our last was a B & D and cost $50. It lasted 10 years-sure got our money's worth! I expect we will on this one as well!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good For Light Duty Work Overall this is an average string trimmer/edger. However, I don't recommend it for heavy duty use. Pros: The 40Volt battery system is solid. The charge lasted as advertised and I was able to complete one yard on a single charge. A second battery would be ideal, in order to complete both front and back yards without having to recharge battery. However, the price for a standalone battery is too high (its about half the price of the entire trimmer), which negates this option. The unit is light weight and easy to manage. Cons: Unfortunately I had to return the unit as its just not meant for heavy duty use. The trimmer head is where this unit falls short. It is single line (not double), the auto feed system is spotty and annoying, and it burns through line extremely fast. Furthermore, you can't load heavier gauge line, and its dificult to reload the line manually. Instead, it is set up to use a new spool every time. This is very convenient, but too costly for my needs.

Pending shoulder surgery prompted me to look into replacing my gas powered trimmer with an easy start electric trimmer. After looking at reviews I selected the Black and Decker 13 inch 40 volt model. I am so pleased with how light it is and how powerfull it is. My wife is able to use it as well. What a convenience not to have to mess with gas/oil and yanking on a starter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best trimmer I have ever owned! First off, It's a pleasure not to have to mix gas & oil, and then pull a cord lord knows how many times to get going. Just push the button and go! I have about 5,500 square feet of lawn on a corner lot with fences in the back yard, and two brick gardens on the side and front. I also edge the sidewalk and curb. I have used this trimmer 4 times now, and the original spool of string ran out half way into the 4th use. The automatic line feed works flawlessly, and I have yet to run the battery down. It also charges the battery in less then an hour, so if it does run down, you can be back at it in a short time. I have only used the power setting on number 1. It goes all the way to 6, but it did what I wanted on the lowest setting, and the battery will last longer on the lower settings. I also bought a 3 pack of replacement spools, and a 500 ft lenght of .065 string so I can rewind my own spools, so I will never run out. I absolutely love this thing, and actually look forward to using it. If your looking for hassel free trimming and edging, then I suggest you give it a try. B&D has a 30 day money back policy if you don't like it. TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 20 minute battery life? Like a fisher price trimmer My yard is not exceptionally large and grass not that thick. That being said I bought this when our gas powered trimmer died. Thinking this would be easier on me as well as the environment, thought why not try it. Big mistake. While it is easier to handle and less noisy, it lasts for about 20 minutes if you have it on level 2. That comes to about 20% of my yard. Black and Decker answer to my inquiries? Buy another battery, $90 more. Great solution, for them If you have a normal sized back and front you can NOT trim in one session. Do not know about the rest of you but once I start do not want to have to wait 1.5 hours to recharge and then start again. Not to mention that even that was not enough for my yard. Bottom line trimmer not worth the cost, $170 plus another $90 for extra battery? Will stick to gas, may be hard to start but once it does runs for a lot longer on a tank of gas then this toy did on a battery charge
