Mantle is nice in design but my contractor wasn't able to install it due to an issue with the wall mounting hardware. The hardware is a narrow piece of wood that isn't sufficient to hold the mantle to the wall. Additionally, the hardware I received was damaged which made it even more difficult to use. Another issue was there were no instructions. I had to look them up on line. That being said, the mantle itself is nicely made and would be a nice addition to any decor.

This is a really nice looking mantle shelf! It looks distressed and worn but seems to be well made. It is lighter than you'd think. The wood isn't very heavy. It has a ledge you put on the wall and then connect /sit this on to hook. Like cabinets. It holds well. I'm not sure how much weight it can hold so I'm putting very little on it. But so far it looks and works great. Statement piece.

(What's this)
The Bjorn Woodworks 72-inch Saga Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel Distressed/Stained/Glazed is a very nice looking shelf that will fit in with modern or rustic styles, and is great for new construction or renovations. The shelf is constructed of real wood, not particle or press board with a veneer. The staining and glazing are well done, and the rough-hewn look is authentic. Installation is fairly straightforward: attach the cleat to the wall, slide the mantle onto the cleat, secure the mantle to the cleat. The only issue I have with this particular product is that the cleats seem to be too small and are at high risk of splitting. Even with pre-drilled holes, I'm concerned for the longevity of the cleat.

(What's this)
This is a ready-to-install wood mantel made of rustic stained wood. It is natural wood with metal screws in its construction, formed in a box shape (it is not one solid, heavy piece of wood). Therefore, it is fairly light and can be mounted on a cleat screwed into the wall studs. I used this to modify the mantel on my existing fireplace, which had a narrow inadequate mantel. I put mine right on top of the old one, but this could also be floated above a fireplace, used to replace a mantel which was removed, or used as a floating shelf. This is easy to install. The cleat is mounted into wall studs using screws. I had to use anchors as my walls don't have studs in this location. The mantel just hangs on the cleat and could probably be removed quite easily. This is a good mantel for those with a standard size fireplace (I got the 72", which provided some overhang on both sides), For those who don't need something custom size, who would like to go pick it up ready to install or have it delivered, this was very handy. There is one little ding in the corner where the mantel was bumped during transport. I don't plan on returning it, this should be easy to fix with a dab of stain. Recommended.

It came very well packaged and arrived just fine. It is fairly heavy, since it is made of real wood, so its not some flimsy shelf like so many you see today. I like the distressed look of it. The mantel is heavy and you should get a second person to help out. It only came with screws. This is a 72" shelf. The mantel attaches to the wall with a cleat. It's very important that you hit the studs in the wall find heavy duty anchor to put in the sheetrock. I would also recommend in pre-drilling holes in the cleat you have to mount to the wall to prevent from cracking it. The instructions tell you to put a screw in the top of the mantel and into the cleat. This screw is not included. Before installing that top screw, predrill before installing the screw to prevent cracking of the board. I would drill a counter sink as well.

The shelf has a "rough-sawn" texture which looks great in our basement game room. It's sturdy and the 10 inch depth allows a lot of room to display your stuff. Installation was easy. Once I figured out where I wanted it, the cleat was installed and the shelf was hung in under 10 minutes. The shelf comes with a French Cleat. Basically two pieces of wood cut at an angle so they lock together. One piece comes attached to the shelf and you attach the other to the wall. In the pictures below, there is one showing the piece attached to the wall and the other on the shelf. Two things kept me from giving the a 5 star rating. The color of my shelf didn't match the picture. It is a lot closer to gray than it looks in the picture. On the value side, I think the price is a bit high. Overall, the shelf looks great and I'm happy with how it turned out.

(What's this)
Bjorn Woodworks 72 in. x 10 in. Saga Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel, Distressed/ Stained/ and Glazed While I really like the looks and general construction of this mantel, I had run into a couple of issues with it. A minor issue was the omission of a screw to use to screw the top side of the mantle to the cleat. While I had plenty of my own, if your following the included directions, I think they should have included more screws, but looking at the parts list, there is no amount given to the number of screws that should be included. I had found a total of 4 screws for this 72-inch mantle in the package, and I can’t see using less than 4 screws to attach the wall cleat that is screwed into the studs in the wall. The biggest issue I have with the mantle is the wood cleat they use to hold this heavy mantle up is a bit on the small side. The area of the cleat where you are instructed to drill 1/8” holes, the wood cracked after inserting the screws and trying to screw them in to the wall. I really think they should use a metal cleat or a much thicker piece of wood to use as a cleat. As it is, I don’t trust it to put things on the mantle that would add much weight to the mantle, and I had place things closer to the wall side of the mantle to put less stress on the cleat. I love the look of the mantle enough that I plan on removing both parts of the cleat and making my own hanging mechanism to hold the mantle up. In summary, until they make changes to the design of the cleat system, I cannot heartily recommend this product as it is. The mantle is beautiful, its just the cleat system used in this instance is not as heavy duty as I would expect.

+ boards screwed together - cleat did not come close to resembling line art in instructions - consequently shelf pitches forward by ~2"(/10", 1:5) without brackets (not included) +/- very "knotty" knotty alder The bottom line for this shelf is, the cleat was cut way too thin, and the shelf pitches forward by about 2" at the end of the 10" depth. Theoretically if the angle was cut correctly, and the complementary angle of the lip inside the box was cut correctly, it *shouldn't* pitch, so it could be the width of the cleat being about 1/4" the width the instruction's line art suggests, isn't enough for something in the shelf to rest against. One of the pictures shows it being propped up by a vitamin bottle; otherwise it will rest comfortably on the perpendicular steel rail shelf. I installed this on brick, but the cleat itself is flush, so the non-smooth surface has nothing to do with pitching. I wound up buying $25 worth of shelf brackets to make the shelf usable, each 50lbs capacity, which helps me because the shelf is only rated at 50lbs period. Though I will say the first hd.com search results for floating shelves are rated at ~15lbs or so (MDF. Curious what low density is like.) There's not much hiding the brackets, but then there's not much hiding a sloped shelf. I looked up knotty alder on hd.com -- the gouges/knot-splits in my pictures are apparently an aesthetic plus -- I guess while the not-knotty-alder is used by Fender for Telecasters, the knotty boards are used as panelling, and the deeply split knots pop from a distance. But, my cleat was very knotty pine -- structurally sound, but without the discoloration of knot margins, it looked like someone tested a machete on it. With the severely reduced width, I *assume* it's structurally sound, but, brakets, so whatever. I am impressed the boards are screwed together; from the pictures it looked like they might have been glued. And they're plenty thick, I believe 3/4"; the shelf has no back, it's 5-sided and hollow, but the screws are angled and I'm pretty sure it can withstand 3x50lb loads if I space them over the brackets (not included.)

(What's this)
When I ordered this Bjorn Woodworks 72 in. x 10 in. Saga Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel, I was so sure it would fit a certain spot in my living room, that I didn't bother measuring. My bad! Turns out, it was just 4-6 inches too long. However, all is not lost, as I have another spot for it almost as good. It came very well packaged and arrived just fine. It is fairly heavy, since it is made of real wood, so its not some flimsy shelf like so many you see today. I like the distressed look of it, since we have kind of a rustic looking decor. I will need some help hanging it, mainly so I can mark the top line of where I want it, because the cleat it hangs from mounts 1 5/8 inches below that. They included some 3-inch deck screws to hang it with. If you cannot hit wall studs, you should buy some good drywall anchors so it doesn't pull loose. All in all, we love this mantel shelf. Thanks Bjorn, and Home Depot!

(What's this)
This is a great addition to most any decor, modern or vintage. I have an all wood living room with a nautical theme and this weathered mantel fits right into my look. WHAT YOU GET: Mantel, wooden angled wall cleat, screws for attachment. WHAT YOU NEED: Power drill with bits, screwdriver and level. If this will be mounted on a stone or concrete wall you will need to provide the specialized hardware to do so. INSTALL: Mounting is very easy. Hardware for stud fastening is included. This MUST be mounted to wall studs, it's heavy and cantilevered out and needs a steady stud mount. The wall cleat goes up first, allowing you to center and level the mount first with the lightweight cleat, then you can just hang the mantel on the cleat and then screw it down tight. Total install time with one person is about 20-30 minutes once you find the studs to screw to. DIMENSIONS: 72 inches wide, 9 1/2 inches deep and 3 3/4 inches tall. OVERALL: This is made from all REAL wood no fiber board or plastic laminate, right here in the USA. The weathered stressed finish looks awesome on my real wood paneling. The large shelf size will be perfect for my model ships. Ease of install, quality looks, 100% real wood and that cool dark weathered look make for an easy recommendation.
