I am interested in using this as a packaging filler, rather than bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts. Can anyone supply the expanded volume of one can?
Asked by: Mugwumps
from the "Product Overview": "One 16 oz. can equals up to 24 tubes of caulk" Assuming that they mean a standard tube of caulk (which is 300ml), that would amount to 7.2 liters, except for the key qualifier "up to" that in the real world means the yeild will likely be a lot less. Unlike the other answers, your intented use is not that ridiculous - there are commercially available foam-in-place systems for packaging that do exactly what you've mentioned. However, those foam-in-place systems produce a foam that is more flexible, more like the Window & Door version of Great Stuff than this Big Gap Fill version. But using gap-fiill spray foam cans like these is not cost effective or time-efficient so unless it's a very limited need, this is not the way to go.

Can i apply this in a gap that is vertical vs horizontal? Any tips?

Asked by: JB
Use masking tape for small gaps, duct tape for large gaps. Tape over the gap (on both sides if you can) then punch holes in the tape and spray foam through the holes. The tape (kind of like "forms" for concrete) will help keep the foam where it belongs.

I had an opening outside where neighborhood rats were coming in due to construction, then they bored through cabinets into my kitchen. Used this stuff to close up openings outside and in my kitchen, and problem solved. No more rodents coming into the house. It comes out through the straw and continues to expand into any opening you need to close up. The downfall is that it comes out white but turns this putrid yellow, you cannot work with it to flatten it out so that it's flush with your gap, and the straw is a one-time use only, there's no way to get acetone through it to clean it out. But if you're ready to empty out the can in one use, it works great!

Two complaints is that once you use it you pretty much have to finish the can, if not it gets all clogged up... if they can find a way to make it better that would be great! The second complaint is that there is no way to use it pointed upwards. In other words if you are trying to use it on a ceiling etc. it is really tough. Great for flat services that are lower on the ground etc. But if you tried to use it for example on the right side of a doorframe it's not as easy!

They really ought to be monitored by Dow to get the correct information out about their individual products. Here are some "FACTS" about this product: Great Stuff Big Gap Filler Expanding Straw Foam 20 oz High quality expanding urethane foam designed to fill large areas quickly and permanently. Uses include filling holes, cracks, or gaps that require a complete airtight and waterproof seal but are too large to be filled with ordinary caulk. The foam expands approximately 3 times its original volume, is tack free in approximately 45 minutes, and fully cured in 12 hours. Dispensing apparatus included with each can. UL classified. No CFC's. Features: 20 oz,For voids larger than 2",expands 60%,1" equal to R5 value Forms a permanent weather-tight seal to minimize drafts and insect infestation Bonds to wood, drywall, metal, masonry, glass, and most plastics, Interior/exterior use Tack free in six minutes-trims in 30 minutes,Foam elasticity allows for movement/shifting within a structure from winter to summer Paintable, stainable and sandable, Cures rigid, UL classified. Differences Between Latex and Polyurethane Foam Sealant There are two key differences between latex foam and GREAT STUFF polyurethane foam sealant: Latex foams are typically "open cell" and, as a result, can take on water. In fact, the same properties that allow you to wash latex foam off your hands with water also mean that the cured foam can absorb water. This can cause wood rot or deterioration in areas where wet latex foam is next to wood, such as a window frame. In contrast, GREAT STUFF is a closed-cell foam. It forms a water-resistant outer skin when cured. Latex foam does not expand. GREAT STUFF expands to thoroughly fill all voids and cavities making it an ideal air sealant.

I used this product to seal a gap around an outside faucet (the opening in the house was wider than the pipe) and it worked great. One caveat: the product is difficult to control. I used it to seal around a storm door and I made an awful mess. The can was difficult to control and the foam ended up going everywhere. It is difficult to remove so I am still trying to clean up the mess. In retrospect, I should have used a different insulation.

I used this to reseal a corner of fiber-board ductwork where a mouse had created a 2 inch hole. It applies easily, expands and hardens. For my mouse hole, I then trimmed it flush with a hacksaw blade, and applied a little silver-foil duct tape over it. The can and this nozzle should keep a few months (years?) with the new easy close nozzle, because I'm sure I will need it again!

The spray tube snapped off or fell off within seconds of first use and there was no way to reattach the tube. Nearly the entire can was wasted. Say it is user error and I would not totally disagree, however, I have used spray foam before and the tube just slips on the can and is easily attached, removed and attached again.
