Questions & Answers

The unit requires 230V voltage. How do you use it in US where household voltage is 110?

The unit requires 230V voltage. How do you use it in US where household voltage is 110?
Asked by: Vivienne
The main panel supplies 230 volts (nominal voltage may be 220 to 240 volt), from which 110 volt circuits are distributed to the common outlets and devices. 230 volts is available but an electrician would need to run a circuit from the panel to the air conditioner. The higher voltage is an advantage because the circuit can be run with smaller gauge wire than lower voltages. The actual cost of operation is the same whether 110 or 230 volt because you are paying for wattage, not voltage. Volt x amps = watts. For example, a 110 watt light bulb energized with 110 volts draws 1 amp. The same 110 watt bulb energized by 220 volts only draws .5 amps, but the wattage is the same, therefore the cost of operation is the same.

how many btu's do I need for a room 20x20

Asked by: donald
Generally we use 400 sf per ton for commercial work ( more people and more heat load) for a residential application it can range from 600 to 800 sf.(even higher in the right conditions). Use the higher areas if the space is well insulated, has minimum outside wall, thermal windows ( low e) . Generally you want to not over size an a/c unit as it only removes moisture when it runs. The removal of moisture (humidity) is the real reason for feeling comfortable. Too large of unit will only run for short periods, make the room too cold and still feel clammy.

Humidity Control

Does this unit also provide for humidity control? There can be very high humidity without high heat. Is there a setting for this or how would you address the issue?
Asked by: kl27
The short answer is "yes", however it requires explanation. The Terra unit has what's called "Dry mode" in which the A/C portion cuts it's output by half in order to cool the air twice as much. It's effective to a certain extent, but if you are having a high heat + high humidity situation it's more effective to just cool the room at a lower setting. I actually threw this humidity question towards several A/C pros, everyone of them used my question to try and sell me a "better" unit because apparently mine was under-powered to accomplish this task (not true). My unit resides in a F.R.O.G. The A/C can cool the room just fine, it's just that the humidity feels twice what the heat is. I finally purchased a dehumidifier which works great. If you live in the South/South-East do yourself a favor and buy one; they aren't just for basements. Had I done this years ago, I'd probably have saved myself a mini-split clean-up call from all the mold that grows when the unit is exposed to humidity levels over 60% for long periods.

Is there any way to get a replacement remote for this unit (GREE Terra24hp230v1a)?

Asked by: Ej
Sure there is, you can order it from almost any relevant website. Just list the model you're looking for in any search engine plus the words "Replacement remote". There are Gree brand ones and also third-party makers that are compatible with this unit.

Ultra Efficient 9,000 BTU (3/4 Ton) Ductless (Duct Free) Mini Split Air Conditioner with Inverter, Heat, Remote 208-230V is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't give it zero While the unit may work, if you need replacement parts it takes MONTHS. I have one that the fan motor went out in July 2018, it is November and still no part. It is under warranty, but support is horrible.

I looked online and now it says it is discontinued. I will be taking it back to the store to exchange it for a better one. I have the installer coming back out to check it out and see what the issues is.

I had an experienced friend install this unit in my garage/shop/man-cave over a year ago and it's a great product. Nice, slick looking, very quiet, and the ultra high efficiency 21 SEER rating sure is gratifying. Many folks have never hear of Gree, but they and Daiken have, I believe, combined to form the largest manufacturer of HVAC products in the world so repair parts should not be a problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great unit, but don't expect to find parts I had this unit installed 20 months ago and it performed great. Unfortunately we flooded in the August flood in South Louisiana...The only part that seems to have failed was the outside control board...good luck trying to find one. Parts warranties are worthless if the parts are not available. I like the unit & am planning to order one to replace the flood damaged unit, but will keep the old one as a donor unit in case something should go awry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gree 24000 BTU ultra efficient 21 SEER Bought this unit to keep my room at constant temperature, " CULTIVATION ROOM" installed 9/15 by myself and a buddy "for muscle" no wiring diagram but you tube has a video that shows the wiring diagram"which was needed" vacuum tested the lines before releasing the freon into the pipes which was important because the fitting that come with the copper piping set aren't the greatest quality so I wen to my local plumbing store and purchased new fittings soldered them on and no leaks, the unit turned right on, no problems nice design and very quiet compared to other mini splits brands.it is now 7/16 and currently have not had a single problem with the unit room is at desired temperature 75 degrees and it is currently 102 degrees in Northern Cali. Best part my electric bill! this unit sips electricity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AC Heat Pump Works Well The indoor unit is much quieter than window AC. The sound is noticeable at the two highest fan speeds. If this unit turns out to be as efficient as it is quiet, it will be a good value. The curved cable guide on the inside unit is a great convenience. Since there is no authorized installer in my area (rural Appalachia), I called a local AC / Heating Company. They ran the nitrogen pressure test, pulled the vacuum, field fabricated connections from the outside copper lines to the inside unit, and opened valves. The outdoor unit is the great surprise. The only way I can tell from more than a few away that it is running is by the grass moving. There are a few practical design flaws. One is screws for the outdoor unit electrical connection cover are behind the cable entry holes. If you use weather tight whip, you are in for a challenge. There is an unlabeled button on the remote control that makes one of two symbols appear. There is nothing in the installation guide or owners manual that explains the pine tree symbol or the little house with the in and out arrows. Other annoying things during installation are fitting size reported by HVAC technician to be unusual for residential units, and electrical terminals. The electrical terminals are beautiful as in art, but there is no groove in the metal to hold the wire while you tighten it in the small space provided. One BIG BAD thing - no customer service; NONE. The number on line goes to Home Depot and is automatically switched to some other organization the leads to another line that is never answered. They do not answer. They do not return phone messages. The distributor / contractor support answers the phone but will not answer any questions. They will NOT help homeowners period. When I called Home Depot they were very understanding, but had no information. If there are questions or problems you can't solve, you are on your own.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Purchase EVER! Bought the unit last August, it seemed to operate OK at first. Within 3 months, it stopped working well, and my energy bill jumped. Then Winter came and I didn't use it, had it serviced in spring, and they found the controller board was bad. Not only did it take 2 weeks to get a replacement from GREE, the technician had a really hard time reaching them. Well we have replaced the board 3 times now, it still doesn't work. Home Depot is refusing to take it back, being over 90 days, GREE is unreachable, and won't return calls, won't return emails, no communication from them. I saved $1500 by getting this unit instead of getting a Mitsubishi or Fujitsu, and I am pretty sure that I will have put more into this unit, and then still 6 months later will have to buy a NEW unit to replace this one. So, Buyer Be ware... This is a junk Chinese product, with no real support in the US, no customer service, so definitely get the extended warranty if you decide to risk it.
