Is it necessary to paint the door-- can I leave it as the primed white?

Asked by TT October 23, 2019

Millworks Specialist of the Home Depot - It is required by the Masonite manufacturer warranty to paint an interior door within 14 days of owning the door. Warranty aside, the primer on the door will yellow with time and scuff easily. Paint will resist water damage to the door unlike primer and will seal the glue joints between the door skin and the door framing and prevent delamination of the doorskin caused by excessive moisture and heat.

This door is woring perfectly for me in 4 pocket doors. That hardware is less durable than almost all Barn Door hardware styles. They key is the slide bar install rather than the door. As long as you have a solid header in the wall for affixing the slide bar, the door itself can handle this setup.

Yes, we used it for our laundry pocket door. Beware of bad materials on this door, though. The skin is a paper board material.

Can I trim a 1/4" of the one side so the door will fit the current opening?

Asked by Marsh April 20, 2019

Yes - it has 4.5 inches from side door edge to glass so reasonably 2-3 inches of trim opportunity - but it looks great with as much wood width as possible. you'll need to prime and paint the new cut edge.

Can this be installed as a pocket door

Home Depot Millworks Specialist here: yes, any slab door can be used as a pocket door given it qualifies under the available width, length, and thickness of the pocket door framing you are using.

I think that would be a perfect spot ... I use one at either end of a pass through laundry room. They give an impression of privacy but not blockout?

Is the glass a safety glass or can it shatter ?

Home Depot Millworks Specialist: The door is tempered glass due to the surface area size but is not otherwise safety glass. Glass considered to be safety glass is typically referring to glass with the diamond shaped reinforcement inside of the glass found in schools and office building doors.

Yes - it's solid core and can handle some trimming - I'd not want to trim the top since that dimension balances the width of the sides, but the bottom could handle shortening by as much as 3-4 inches.

I have had my eye on this door and others like it. I chose this one because of price point and the fact it was in stock at HD. I paid a contractor to install it. It came out beautiful. I could not give 5 stars because it has a defect, but I was not going to return it as the contractor was about to put it up and had the frame built around it. If you wait until end to remove plastic you will miss the defect. The manufacturer missed a spot when sandblasting. It really sucks, but I can live with it. Most people are expecting a perfectly finished door, even if under $200. I hope that the company takes this in consideration.

The door is very pretty and sturdy. The only thing I didn't like was that the plastic around the glass was very difficult to remove

poor quality control. you can see in the included pics that there is some white thing stuck inside of the glass, and this cannot be remedied. secondly, the protective plastic sheet on the glass is very sloppy--it seems like they just wrap the glass in plastic and stick it into the middle of the door, so the edges are impossible to remove (hence having to cut with a knife). they should instead cover the glass with two separate sticky films, after first priming the wood.

I purchased 2 of these doors, which came with a coat of primer. Privacy glass had protective film on both sides to protect when finishing the doors. The manufacturer must have used a sprayer to prime the doors because the protective film was covered in white paint making it difficult to clearly inspect the glass for damages. There was one ding in the door which I received a $50 credit from Home Depot. I hired a carpenter to resize the two doors, repair the ding, and install them which cost me $200.00 Neither my carpenter or I noticed a crack in the glass until the doors were painted and the protective film was removed. By the way, remove the protective film outside because the primer falls to the ground in small flakes, it was the biggest mess ever! We removed the film and not only was there a large crack in the upper corner of one of the doors, the manufacturer did a terrible job priming the doors. There is over spray on the glass, too much paint in the corners and edges of the door making it look really bad. I took photos of the glass and spoke to Home Depot. They offered to replace the doors but I had already paid a carpenter to resize the doors and install them for $200. All I wanted was someone to professionally remove the primer on the glass, cut the big globs so it is a clean line, and minimize the appearance of the crack in the glass. The only deal they would offer is bring the doors back. I invested a lot of time and money on the door already, do you think I want to start all over again plus hire my carpenter back and spend another 200 to get these doors sized and installed. I'm disappointed Home Depot, you've always been fair with me until now.

The quality of the door is terrible! We bought two of these doors and as we were mortising and chiseling out the parts for the lock sets, the paper "skin" is so easy to be damaged. We had to sand it a few times and use caulking to prevent it from bubbling from the paint. Why would you use paper board for the skin of a door??

We are doing a major remodel of our condo and are installing two of these doors between our living room and study/ guest room with barn-door hardware. The quality is great, and the glass is not see-through unless you are standing within about a foot of the door, so these are perfect to let in light while still providing privacy.

The door and glass are good quality, not too heavy, light enough to move around easily prior to install, and I like that it was primed for paint.
