for cutting thick metal what is preferable 18 or 24 TPI?

I want to able to cut thick metal, what blade and TPI is better? It looks like both 18 and 24 TPI blades are rated up to 5/16, now I cut 1/2" of mild steel yesterday with original 14 TPI blade, I just went with slower speed. I have some bars that are 1" and 1-1/2" and I plan to cut them, is this the best blade for the job?

it's kinds counterintuitive I know but, "rule of thumb" is 3 teeth in the material at all times so, 24tpi for really thin sheet and a jagged ole' 10/14 for a 2" bar of 1095. Let her rip!
