I have a large 30x36 mirror. How many metal mirror clips should I use?

There seem to be no standard for # of clips to use in relation to inches of mirror.

Four clips (one near each corner) should be adequate, but it depends on how you anchor the clips. Ideally, the clips will screwed into wall studs. If studs are not located close to your mirror's corners, or are offset to make the mirror mounting seem unattractive, you can use some 75-pound E-Z Ancors sold by Home Depot. Look for HD# 892428.

The difference between the frame and the painting was approximately 3/8". I wasn't sure whether to go with the 1/2" clips or the 3/8" clips.I chose to go with the 3.8" offset clips and it turned out to be the right decision.
