Product Details

This is a 48 in. stainless steel track cap used to repair damaged patio or wardrobe door tracks. It can be cut to desired length. After the old track is prepared by grinding any spots that are wider than the original track width and cleaning it, the new track is simply pressed onto the old track after squirting a thin bead of silicone glue in the replacement track. Using a rubber mallet and a block of wood, the replacement track is snapped down over the old track.

First, you won't find this hanging on the wall with the rest of the sliding door hardware in the hardware aisle of your local HD. It's usually found in the "overhead" so you'll need to flag down someone to climb a ladder, sort through the stuff and find this part. I have an original 70's aluminium sliding door and the track had a few bites taken out of it and some areas that were just worn down to the point where the door rollers were contacting the sill plate. The door would jam and come off the track if you looked at it cross-eyed while moving it. I found this and also bought two new roller cartridges for the sliding door. As it turns out, the rollers' bearings were both shot, causing a lot of the wear on the track so if you're doing this repair, replace the rollers. The replacement track needs a little tweaking to fit over the old track if you want to do it properly. You need to either crimp or expand the new track so that it fits snugly over the old track. The instructions recommend that you use JB-Weld or a similar steel expoy to bond the new track. It's can be a little messy but pay attention to detail and it'll come out fine. You'll want to weigh down the new track when you epoxy it in place to ensure that it sits properly so engineer that before you mix up a batch. The end result is a door that now glides with fingertip pressure. With proper maintenance this should last the life of the door.

Pretty easy to install. I had a problem with the joint popping up. I ended up using Gorilla Super Glue. That did the trick. Replaced the wheels and now it rolls smoothly.
