A:  I used the screws that came with it and just used a power drill. They worked just fine on my metal jamb.

A 1/8" hole is sufficient to drive a #8 screw into a metal surface. A:  Since you were drilling into metal I recommend a metal style screw. Go to Home Depot and asked for a self drilling approximately 3/4 of an inch.metal self drilling screw. When you asked for self drilling it will automatically cut the pilot hole for you and then thread into the metal door.
